Productive weekend

Second time on the rower in one week -- I've "graduated" to twice a week. Boy, that seat rips up the skin on my backside.

What to wear to my sister's wedding? Some people may keep a closet full of wedding-appropriate attire, but I'm just a leetle more practical. So I had some sewing to do. Floor-length hide-the-shoes palazzo pants, a simple sleeveless shirt, and a filmy overjacket I already had. Now that the outfit is almost complete, of course, I'm second-guessing everything about it, to the point where I don't want to wear it at all. *sigh* But frankly there's only one person who will come to this event and spend one microsecond of thought on how bad I look, and NOTHING would make her think I looked good, so I should just get over myself and wear the damn thing.

As you said, it doesn't really matter what you wear. The outfit is to show respect for your sister, and anything you wear that isn't dirty, smelly and torn demonstrates that respect.

Besides that, the outfit sounds really nice.

Aw, thanks! Right now it's looking awfully darn homemade, but that may change when I give it a good ironing.

I also went out today and grabbed 2.5yds of the green material to make a SKIRT, because with the way that fabric drapes, that may come out looking a whole lot better. (Plus way way way easier... could totally do it in an evening.) Must finish what I have first though. Flared pants become First Backup Plan if I can do the skirt.

Ah, joke her if she can't take a fsck. :-) Wear what you like that also respects your sister's wedding and this other person is the one who should get over herself, IMHO.

Ayep, that's a very California way to look at it. I was raised East Coast aka Nothing Is Ever Good Enough, but y'know, if that's truly the case I should quit worrying, right? :-)

[identity profile] quasigeostrophy.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. :-) I'm sure you'll look nice in any case.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, thanks! :-)

I was raised on the east coast but by hippy parents so I'd totally go with what [livejournal.com profile] quasigeostrophy said :)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Two thumbs up to that! :-)

[identity profile] tiger-spot.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds like a nice outfit to me.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! If I had it to do over again I'd choose a fabric that was just a little softer in the way it draped... but y'know what? That's how I learn. I do stuff and I learn. So by the time I'm seventy I'll be pretty darn good at this. :-)

There will be many many cameras! Pix soon!

Would padded cycling shorts help with your rowing?

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmmmmmm, maybe!! Worth a try!

[identity profile] hitchhiker.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
or maybe one of those doughnut cushions :)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Like the ones women sit on after giving birth? I thought I'd never have a good excuse to sit on one of those. :-)

there you go :) i figured it'd slide against the seat and save your butt the friction.

What to wear on Saturday

[identity profile] spindle-rose.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice to hear that I'm not the only one in a small panic about what to wear to the wedding. I do usually keep a couple of wedding appropriate things on hand. But none of them fit my 20 pounds heavier than last time I went to a wedding shape.

I dragged D to the mall for dress shopping yesterday afternoon. Found something that "will do." I'm not thrilled and may hit a different mall tonight if I can stand the though of trying on 10 more dresses.

Oh man, you too? We can swap stories when we get there! I have several lovely things I could wear to a winter wedding, but this... nope.

Isn't it AWFUL, the whole shopping thing? First off, almost nothing that's formal enough -- well, ok, formal enough for a wedding AND floor-length; I have to camouflage those shoes -- allows for the wearing of a bra. There are basically prom dresses and ballgowns. Then you find (after an hour of wandering) one Matronly Dress, and it's built for somebody ten feet tall or it's bright orange or the closest size they have is sixteen or whatEVER. Then you go to the next store. Add the bit about not standing up for more than about twenty minutes in a day, and holy MOLY it's awful!

My favorite are all the strapless / halter styles with EXTRA padding. As if I want any to begin with.

I did find something Sunday. It's cute, silk, and has enough coverage to allow a bra. It may not be dressy enough, but it "will do." I wish S had given a little more guidance on level of formality than dresses/suits. Cocktail dress? Afternoon dress? Sequins? I am afraid I will be underdressed.

Oh no kidding. Padding does NOT equal support, people! I wonder if those styles are made for people with, ahem, lab-created chests. Those folk often need a lot less in the way of support and they kind of like the more-is-better idea.

I bet you will be just fine. Silk isn't casual sportswear, and you have a good eye for style. With that level of guidance there will probably be a bit of variation, too, so we'll all fit in.

Still I have to keep reminding myself: this event is NOT about ME and how good I look! Will I ever grow up past the whole teenage it's-all-about-me angst? :-)

i have a closet full of wedding-appropriate clothing ... for someone else's body. :P

your outfit sounds lovely. dressy enough for the occasion but not ridiculously uncomfortable for you (that's reserved for the wedding party *smirk*).

i'm tempted to suggest you take the fabric scraps and throw together some sort of shoe covering ... then you can say you've got shoes to match! :)

and congrats on the rower progress!

Hah! I know that feeling. Well, ok, I have a beautiful red silk shantung Christmas-or-New-Years dress for someone else's body. I have some wedding-appropriate clothing for, um, WINTER. I am NOT wearing VELVET in JULY. Even if it does show off my favorite necklace very prettily.

Hahahaha shoe covering! I like it! It would be truly heinous, of course, and I'd never actually wear it.

Thanks!

It sounds like an outfit you can wear again and again to formal events, dressing it up with different scarves or jewelry, So it may help to think of this as a beta test. And that means it's close to perfect, right?

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm, yes, a beta test! Not bad! That means I have to make only one more of it to be the final product. ;-) I definitely know which parts of the pattern I'd change next time around.
