Feet: I paid dearly for that half-mile run. I am still hobbling. :-(

Work: I've got a list as long as my arm of topics I want to learn more about. Perhaps another post on this later.

LJ: Catching up, after a weekend away, I reached "skip=475". My reading filter is about to get some SERIOUS pruning. First to go, and I'm sad about this: [livejournal.com profile] tmi_chix. I like the on-topic content, but it's not worth wading through the "am I pregnant?" posts for it. Le sigh, where's my stapler, etc.

I wish there were a way to filter it. Some of the posts there are just great.

Thanks (about the feet). Sometimes I get frustrated/angry, and I think "What if I just went running EVERY MORNING and then they'd hurt so much I'd SCREAM and then the doctor would HAVE TO do something, wouldn't he?" And I realize that's destructive and illogical at best, but a deeply pissed off six-year-old part of me wants to do it anyway. :-/

In theory it should totally be possible to write a filtering proxy for lj. Yet another "someday" thing.

Thanks. I'll eat anti-inflams (well, more of 'em) for a while and see what gives. Maybe my sanity. If you hear a news report about a short blonde chick found naked on the roof with a deer rifle, you'll know what happened. ;-)

Heh, I stole that "naked on a roof with a deer rifle" from somewhere -- don't remember where. A friend of mine was fond of saying "Order is important" and referencing that phrase, ie get on the roof before losing the clothes...

Damn feet. So I guess you're thinking about "Plan B" -- water aerobics, cycling, wheelchair racing? Maybe if you just soaked your feet in ice water immediately afterwards?

Right now I'm on Plan A-and-a-half: take lots of anti-inflams like the doctor said. (A couple of weeks ago he recommended 600mg ibuprofen 3x/day. I gave in and started that this morning.) Then, yeah, Plan B: probably cycling. At least we're heading into spring! :-)

Last night I wondered briefly about alternating hot and cold soaks. Isn't that something people recommend for hand/wrist inflammation?

Well, the usual advice is cold immediately after injury (or exercise which stresses a structure enough to induce inflammation, which is basically an injury on small scale) -- reduces further damage done by detritus released in cell destruction. Alternating heat and cold later on should improve circulation to the area. Many long-term inflammation problems in structures like tendons are due to the poor blood supply for these types of structures and the presence of scar tissue, which is why physical therapy techniques to break up scar tissue and essentially re-injure the area can work.

In other words, it's worth a try!

Thanks for the more detailed information -- I didn't know that. I'll make sure, if I go for temperature-related soaks, to choose cold after exercise and alternations when I haven't just been annoying my feet.

If blood supply is a big issue, it sounds like exercise that doesn't use the feet much would be good too, yes? Swimming, for example, or maybe cycling, I could do just to get the blood moving.

i dunno how it'd work on feet, but i'm really liking this stuff called Blue Stop (http://www.drugstore.com/qxb31598_333181_sespider/blue_stop/blue_stop.htm) -- reminds me of Biofreeze or Icy Hot, but more "peppermint/tingly" than "hot". it seems to mostly freak out the nerves so they shut down for a while, usually long enough for me to get to sleep at least.

(i just saw the price. eesh! i got mine from the box of samples the manufacturer sent us hoping we'd sell 'em in our stores)

Thanks for the recommendation! It sounds like it just might do the trick -- and it might be wonderful on sore new-runner legs, too.

I hope you can keep snagging some out of the samples! Are there more or are you going to have to hope the manufacturer tries again?

probably no more samples. at least not of this brand. generally, once we tell someone "thanks but no thanks" we don't hear from them again (but somehow we still get inundated with stuff on a daily basis). best i can hope for is a similar product getting pushed on us.

Sorry to hear your feet are paying the price. But at least now you know what you can do (or, in some cases, can't) and you can adjust accordingly. :) And you got to run, so that's great!

I know how it is to be behind on LJ, as you can probably guess from when I'm replying to this. :( And this is good for me. I think it's mostly my consideration for putting other people behind that causes me to never, ever post. Or it could be laziness, I guess, but I'm sticking with the first one. ;)
