Just about two weeks ago, on the weekend, I really overdid it. Ran and square danced and spent two days in a row wandering around shops and a street fair. By Sunday afternoon, pulling my left foot out of my shoe gave me stabbing pains that almost made me yelp. So I skipped running for a while. I didn't even want to WALK for a while.

But! Ran two days ago, ran today. I'm getting back into it. That "overdoing it" wasn't permanent. YAY! And here's the double-yay: for the first time, I really felt like I began to run more easily. Y'know how the first mile's the worst, the last mile's almost the worst, and in between is pretty good? Well, all I get so far is the part that is both the first mile and the last mile! But despite the short distance, I'm loosening up some. This is a very, very good sign for recovering my old fitness level... 'slong as the feet keep holding up!

The first mile was the worst. The next mile was pretty bad, too. After that I went into a bit of a decline...

Are you planning to get back into running now that the winter's past, or are you going in other directions at the moment?

I get to run again tomorrow. I hope I'm not pushing -- today is Mad Housecleaning Day, meaning a lot of time on my feet.

Hey CJ,

I just don't know. My first step is to get to regular daily *walking*. Once I'm doing that, I suspect I'll want to speed things up after a while. But I have to see how the knees respond. I'm pleased that I was able to dance for a couple of hours on Sunday evening without any knee twinges. That's an encouraging sign.

I'd enjoy running with you too. :) I'm just getting back into it -- about a mile running, half a mile walking, repeat is what i'm up to now.

I can do the mile running part. If I add half a mile walking I'm asking for trouble.

Hmmm...even the "mile running" part by itself would be cool. I find I miss having someone to run and chatter with. It makes this awkward "just getting started back" part a lot easier too.

It sure does. I run mornings; do you run mornings? lunches? evenings? I'm two minutes from the junction of 85 and 280 (home): how long would it take one of us to reach the other?

I've been thinking about this, and if I'm training I prefer to run in the mornings. (It helps me wake up and get a good start on the day.)

Re: location, I'm south at the other end of 85 (about 5 minutes off the freeway) so 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. We could definitely work something out. :)

Oh wow: 20-30 minutes' drive (one way) in order to run a mile? My time is pretty tight, so that wouldn't be a good tradeoff for me. Would it be worth it for you?

It might be worth it to me...still considering the trade-offs. 'Sides, we'll both be beyond a mile soon enough, if the goal is to be ready for next year's Bay to Breakers.

There should be scooter rental places, like car rental places. People don't always need one for years. Sometimes they need it for a day or two, or a month. And it doesn't have to be new.

Hmm, I bet in Florida they have these. (They have, I am not making this up, health-issue-related strip malls, with stores named things like "DIABETES DEPOT".)
