Spent all day 9/11 on planes, not eating. Stuff available on planes and in airports is generally Lyme-diet-illegal.

Upon arrival, blithely assured everyone that "Sure I can eat at a Ruby Tuesday's; go just about anywhere and I'll find SOMEthing I can eat." Boy did I learn my lesson! I did eat, but I had something like two choices, of which I nixed one -- the salad bar -- because it was 6pm and I needed FAT AND PROTEIN THANKYOU.

Have now installed myself in Boston and promptly begun cooking. Spinach/tomato/onion frittata was shared with my mom this morning; a double batch of palak paneer just came off simmer; cream of asparagus soup is running in the crock; ingredients for Senate bean soup and another double batch of palak paneer are waiting for later. My feet are tired. I will probably go fetch ingredients for onion roast pretty soon, too. My mom's not a big meat eater, but my dad is, and my mom will be OK with scarfing down the scrumptious onion soup that forms at the base.

Happy me. :-)

you do use whole cloves in your onion roast, not cloves of garlic right?

I"m just curious... I tried it... but the whole cloves created a weird taste, and no one would eat the meat and I wouldn't touch the onions.

Oh wow. Yes, I use whole cloves, and personally I love the taste. Huh! What a bummer! Try it without, perhaps?

yeah... I might try it without next time. I like cloves too... but usually with a pork roast or ham... it was too overpowering in the beef dish though. Mostly matters that you like it :) I might try making it with garlic cloves in the meat.... and leave out the salt pork. the onions can stay too. :)

Yeah, tweak it however you like it! I'd be interested in what you find out! I'm sorry to hear the first try didn't come out well, though; that's not an inexpensive chunk of meat.
