lentil thingy

1. DOUBLE the spices, at least the curry powder and the black pepper and the ginger.
2. YES on the stick blender.
3. Water to other-stuff ratio is perfect for soup.
4. Whoever wrote (on the bag of barley, no less) that 1/4 cup of dry barley makes 2 cups of cooked barley was smoking something. But that's OK, because this would have been just as good without. I'll figure out something else to do with the rest of the barley.
5. YUM!

I'll definitely make this again... when I run out of this batch, which will take a while.

[edited to add: It separates, in an hour or so, into glop and a thin layer of water. There is probably a fancypants way to fix this. Me, I'm happy to just stir it. It certainly stays mixed long enough to eat it.]

Awesome, glad it turned out well. I'm allergic to barley, nice to hear it would be good without. I'm shifting my dietary habits yet again and this sounds perfect.

Oh cool! Try it a coupla times & fuss with it & I bet it'll be even better.

Yeah, the barley was nothing as far as this experiment was concerned. I'd decrease the water if I pulled the barley out, leaving perhaps 6 cups of water to my 2.5 cups of lentils, but that's all that would need to change. I bet people eating it would never notice the difference.

I'm so jazzed. I've never made lentil soup before. I adore lentil soup. This took almost no time at all, too, 'cept for waiting for the crock pot. My feet love recipes that don't take much time!

I have now noticed that it separates fairly quickly. I don't mind just stirring it back together but I am sure there is some fancy cook way of making a binder to hold it together better.

Smoked sausage is another nice addition to lentils.

Mmmmm, and then I'd know to grab a red wine, too! (Like I need an excuse.)

barley, particularly pearled barley, is on my list of grains to eat. I have not had any in years, so if you find good uses for it, please share.

Soitenly! F'rex, I don't know if there's any reason at all "risotto" can't be based on some other grain. I may find ou... oh hey, look what Google found for me. I can imagine easy-ifying something like that. I might even have time tomorrow to try!
