I agree with you about the animal acting like it's supposed to act and I too have mixed feelings about zoos. I also have a lot of respect for veterinarians in general, though (probably just 'cause I love animals & vets make animals healthier), so my first thought was more like "That's awful that things went so wrong" rather than "Oh, he was probably a jerk."
For people who take on a pet they can't handle, and could have reasonably expected to be unable to handle, I do not have (polite) words. *sigh*. I hope the vet recovers as well as possible. Anyone with the pluck to wave at the camera from a gurney on which he just got his arm reattached is someone I expect will probably do okay with what life dishes out.
