My first thought was "serves them right, they probably don't care for it very well." (Judgmental, I know, but my first thought in situations like this is always for the animal -- it doesn't know any better and I have real mixed feelings about zoos.)
But then I read to the end of the article and saw that it had been a pet and was given up when it got too big, and realized that it doesn't know how to fend for itself and is doomed to spend its life in the zoo. Didn't the stupid people know when they bought the cute little critter that it was going to get a lot bigger?!
Poor crocodile. Poor vet. I feel sorry for everybody involved now -- except the stupid owners. I hope whatever pet they have now bites them.
I agree with you about the animal acting like it's supposed to act and I too have mixed feelings about zoos. I also have a lot of respect for veterinarians in general, though (probably just 'cause I love animals & vets make animals healthier), so my first thought was more like "That's awful that things went so wrong" rather than "Oh, he was probably a jerk."
For people who take on a pet they can't handle, and could have reasonably expected to be unable to handle, I do not have (polite) words. *sigh*. I hope the vet recovers as well as possible. Anyone with the pluck to wave at the camera from a gurney on which he just got his arm reattached is someone I expect will probably do okay with what life dishes out.
