I finally got my sorry butt in gear and brought Little Girl to the vet this morning. Basically she looks healthy as a stoat, so I hadn't been too worried, but I figured when I had a moment to breathe I should do it.

(Heh: moment to breathe. When I made the appointment I didn't know I was soon to get special attention from the Patron Saint of Chaos.)

Little Girl is basically fine, modulo getting some vaccinations and getting her ears swabbed out, but her TEETH! Her teeth are nasty. She needs those cleaned right away. She's in stage 2 or maybe even 3 periodontal disease, going by the beautiful full-color poster in the exam room, and we'll be lucky if there are no extractions. If her blood work shows she's okay for anesthesia, that'll be done as soon as I get back from San Diego.

Poor kitty.

Ooh, poor kitty!

This happened to our fluffy grey about a year ago. After we got his teeth cleaned, we noticed that he was less cranky (less pain?) and also more active (less pain?)

We felt terrible that we hadn't done it sooner. He seems to be the plaque-y one too. We've gotten his teeth cleaned at least once since then, but nobody else seems to need it (and yes, they all eat the same food).

My [livejournal.com profile] jackiecat has been through this too. I was spoiled, early on, because the first cat I ever had sole responsibility for was one of those who just plain have good teeth. I expected the same with my next one. When I got around to taking Jackie in to the vet, she'd gotten so bad she had two teeth removed!

All that by way of saying I'm not at all surprised you have such different results with the different cats. It seems to vary widely.

Maybe Little Girl is one step worse yet. Well, either that or her teeth were already starting to get crunchy by the time she moved in with me. At least I am reassured that Jackie seemed to come through it all just fine, so hopefully LG will too.
