I'll get on a transatlantic plane without carry-on luggage when they pry it from my cold dead hands.

(Or when they pay me the full replacement price of my checked luggage when I board. On the unlikely chance I ever see it again, and on time too, I'll gladly refund the money... minus a modest handling charge. AND they must have at least three decent full-length novels in the passenger cabin for me, as that's how many I'll need.)

The thing I wondered about when I first heard of the liquids ban this morning was:
a) What about prescription medicines? Would pill form (if available) be ok?
b) What if some one has a medical necessity to keep up their fluid intake? Would liquids be provided once on the plane, by the airline, more than the usual 1-2 beverages mid-flight?
c) Or what about formula for infants?

I'd like to go back to the UK some day. [livejournal.com profile] jemstone's mother was thinking of a trip to Ireland next year. I guess we'll wait and see what happens. Hopefully things will somehow improve. Maybe have explosive sniffing dogs smell-check all liquids going through the security checkpoint?

c) if you are willing to taste the formula or breast milk, they'll let you have it, is what I've heard... BUT not if you want the liquids for yourself, only for babies. No clue about a). Insulin, for example, is hard to smell-check because the bottle is sealed with that rubber top and you draw it out with needles. (Gee, I wonder whether THAT'S allowed on flights. Insulin with needles. Obviously needed by a diabetic passenger. Also obviously easy to kill someone with it.)

In a couple of weeks, I'm gonna find out! My docs tell me I *have* to keep drinking 8-12 oz per hour when flying. (Late pregnancy and blood pressure issues.) I'll get a doctor's note, show it to the flight attendants, and tell them what I need. The alternative? Stopping for a medical emergency in some flyover state -- not what anyone wants to do, I'm sure. :-)

I feel kinda bad for flight attendants in general right now. Their job must be hell, being the first line of "defense" against deeply irritated passengers...

Good luck! I hope the airline can provide the fluids you need since bringing it with you won't be allowed.

(I thought about the fluid intake question remembering when I had a UTI where my doc was telling me I needed to keep up my fluid intake.)

Thanks! I figure they'll bring me water, especially with a doctor's note. Flight attendants tend to be lots nicer than TSA officials... The whole situation is just damned inconvenient, that's all.

If your fluid intake dropped off, at what point would it cross over from "passenger is very uncomfortable" to "medical emergency"? I wonder how stuff like that gets handled. "Uncomfortable" is something that obviously they don't mind people being; "medical emergency" is quite different; the tricksy part is that the line can get thin.

I feel bad for flight attendants too. (And gate agents.)

Probably the point at which I pass out and appear to have a seizure. :-) It tends to freak people out.

But I don't know the general answer to your question.

And I thought this (http://www.thebeerbelly.com/) would only be useful for football games. :)

Hmmm, no metal? You hvae a clever and fiendish mind, sir; I salute you. :)

It's mostly a matter of desperation. I want my water, darn it! :)

Amen. It's getting so I'm wishing personal jets were more affordable -- and I've never wanted to fly a jet.

Oooh, that would definitely be a nice alternative. Now, let's see, should I make my priority learning to fly or saving enough money for a jet? I wonder which would take longer. :)
