The other day I went to a Thai restaurant, and a little while after coming home I

EUPHEMISM ALERT

"didn't feel well".

END OF EUPHEMISM

I figured I ate way too much way too fast or something. Sadly, I no longer think that was it. Today I made some rice and put a bit of leftover Thai peanut sauce on it. Shortly afterward, I [euphemism here].

This time it was definitely the peanut sauce. I am going to be bummed if this keeps happening every time I try to eat peanut sauce! I LIKE peanut sauce! That's the whole point of satay, isn't it? Carrying that scrumptious sauce into the mouth? ([livejournal.com profile] palecur, I can't hear you la la la la.)

Maybe it's just the way that particular place makes it. I can hope.

I "don't feel well" when I've had too much fermented soy (like soy sauce). The problem is cumulative, so if I studiously avoid soy for a good long time, I can enjoy a nice Asian meal now & again.

Hmmm. Peanuts being somewhat related to soy makes this a possible thing for me to try, too.

AFAIK, there's soy sauce in satay peanut sauce.

I work with a geneticist who specializes in peanut allergies. It's really interesting to listen to him talk about how peanuts and soy are similar, and how they're different.

If you find yourself with any specific questions, I'd be happy to pass them along.

There is? Wow, I had no idea. I'm guessing it's the specific sauce that's the problem, because I can eat peanuts and peanut butter with no trouble. I hope it's just this one batch...

Thanks!

It was probably just that particular batch of peanut sauce. Maybe it was cross-contaminated with something in the kitchen, or used bad peanuts, or something. Point being -- don't kick peanut sauce out of your life forever! It's too tasty for that! :-)
Monday, May 29th, 2006 02:29 am (UTC)
Well, I'll *certainly* at least try again! :-)

For what it's worth, I had no trouble. Oh dear. No peanut sauce is an awful condemnation.
Monday, May 29th, 2006 05:32 am (UTC)
Oh foo! Well, I sure hope it's just that particular batch *anyway*. Maybe it got a touch of something fish-related in it.
Monday, May 29th, 2006 06:43 pm (UTC)
You might ask if they use any fish sauce in the making of the peanut sauce. It's pretty likely.
Monday, May 29th, 2006 08:21 pm (UTC)
That would explain a *lot*. Dang.

I always have to ask because some places use coconut milk in their peanut sauce. Since most canned coconut milk is heavily treated with sulfites, I have to avoid it (nuless I can check the label and verify it's OK.)

Given how my allergies have been escalating of late, I'm having to be extra careful.

Food sensitivities/allergies are a royal pain in the butt. Everybody thinks it's so cool to make a fancy schmancy sauce with 1.7 million ingredients, all but two of which are invisible in the final product, and blammo!, suddenly people can't eat it. Surprise.

Every so often I get to feeling sorry for myself because fish shows up in a bunch of weird TOTALLY UNNECESSARY places, and then I remember the guy I met once who was allergic to corn. All forms of corn: corn starch, high fructose corn syrup... everything. He could drink ONE cola (Jolt is still sweetened with sugar) and eat ONE brand of pasta and I don't even know what else. In the US, corn is one of the most ubiquitous foods. When I think of him I don't feel too sorry for myself any more.

I know the same guy. I also have a camper (at the summer camp where I cook for a week) who is allergic to corn, and that week is the only time she gets to eat dessert (because I make special things for her.)

Yikes. Corn is downright oppressive.

That's not a far-fetched notion considering how prominently shrimp and other shellfish are featured in their menu.
Tuesday, May 30th, 2006 06:19 am (UTC)
Yeah. I never knew I was quite THAT sensitive though!

Satay is just a transport mechanism for peanut sauce after all!!!

I hope it's not the peanut sauce and I hope you feel better... or cope with it soon. ;)

Monday, May 29th, 2006 05:33 am (UTC)
Absolutely! That's what satay is FOR!

I was better quickly in both cases. Thanks. :)

And then there's what happened to me... "Go away for the weekend, hang out with people from all over the world, come back with some exotic stomach bug." I'm the third person from the dance I just went to that I know of to come down sick.
Tuesday, May 30th, 2006 05:33 pm (UTC)
Yuck! I hope you're better quickly! I heard Carol (does she spell it Carole?) was sick as well, although perhaps that wasn't a stomach bug.
