I got tagged with the book version of the movie quiz. The most interesting nugget from this is how many books I own. I've never counted. I love books, I buy books, I have trouble getting rid of books (but I will cull when pressed), and one of the most relaxing things I do is curl up with a good book. I figured I might have several hundred.

I started mentally counting bookcases in the house -- only mine, not [livejournal.com profile] rfrench's, and not the shelves with quilts on them. I believe I have between 150 and 175 linear feet of books. I'm sure that's at least twelve books per foot, probably a good bit more on average, so somewhere between 1800 and 2100 books as a conservative estimate.

Wow.

I have about that much too, and not nearly enough shelves for them :-(

But at least my apartment isn't quite to <url="http://www.randomthink.net/misc/ebay/">this stage yet (link to many pictures of a nearly unbelievable domestic clutter, funny and appalling both).

I have almost enough shelves. About twenty linear feet of books are packed in boxes or stacked next to / atop stuffed bookcases. If I had never gotten rid of any books, I'd probably have double the number I have now, with WAY too little shelving for all of them; whole rooms would be paved one-deep in book boxes. It is intriguing to think about what effect my book habit has on my mortgage payment (and vice versa).

nearly unbelievable domestic clutter

Ohhh yeah. I've seen that page before, posted by a LJ-friend, and it spurred me to a few weeks of decluttering activity. Wouldn't half mind doing another burst like that.

Off the top of my head I think I have something like 140 linear feet that contains only books. That would be around 1600-1700 books for me, so the house has around 3500.

But how many linear feet of books do you have on the top of your head??

We should get the foundation and support beams inspected for strength. ;-)

You'll have to come see our collection sometime. I still think we have you beat :-)

Try it with California real estate prices, then it's a fair contest. ;-)

Good thing books are useful for fanning a fevered brow. :-)

I'm both too scared to count all my books and incapable of counting them at the moment since some are still in boxes or not properly on shelves. Though I think an actual majority of them are on shelves, and some are even roughly categorized. But I can count bookshelves, and I have at least 7ish full-height-equivalent bookshelves.... Being surrounded by books makes me happy!

Being surrounded by books is more happy-making for me than being surrounded by almost anything else... except maybe Yosemite Valley. :-)

Shelves with quilts on them? *puzzled*

Yeah, I collected quilts for a while and I have some folded on shelves. They look all nifty and pretty, tidily folded like that.
