I went in this morning to pick up my orthotics. My podiatrist had sent them back to the manufacturer to have metatarsal support pads built into them.

I almost panicked when I saw the new shape of the surface. There were two bumps on each insole, and they were HUGE! Fortunately, unlike the rest of the insole, the bumps themselves are squishy.

I suspect that either the placement is a little bit off on the left one or I don't have it quite right in my shoe. That foot is aching in the plantar arch. The right foot just aches like it usually does, which probably means the bumps haven't had much of an effect yet.

Once I have become acclimated to these things again I'll try running a mile or so.

Mine were based on a plaster cast of the bottom of my feet. I have plastic with foam over it, the foam stops just before my toes. Thankfully, they do help most of the time, although I have noticed that if I am going to be standing or walking for most of the day I do better wearing them in my boots rather than shoes with no ankle support. The one other thing I've noticed about my orthotics is that I now get a callus at the back of my heel where it slips a little. Sanding down the callus periodically seems to take care of that problem. I've had my orthotics for 1 year this month.

Good luck with your new orthotics!

Mine, too, were made from plaster casts of my feet. I've had them since January, but recently sent them back to get metatarsal support added. In my case the foam goes all the way to the toe of my shoe. In fact I had them lengthen that a little so that the orthotics wouldn't slip forward, because I grew the WEIRDEST shaped callus that expanded downward into the space between the end of the orthotic and the back of my shoe. Who ever heard of a sharp callus? That's what mine was: sharp. I took it off with scissors. Not purty, but it works.

Thanks for the luck! I hope I don't have to get the left one redone again. I really don't like living without them!
