Yes, I'm at work at quarter of one in the morning. For those who don't know me yet, you guessed it, I'm a computer programmer. I'm reworking a chunk of the operating system and the changes are spreading -- everywhere I turn I've got to update several more files.

Yesterday I broke down the work into five major pieces. After the first piece, the operating system should boot. I just got that set of changes to compile... AND IT BOOTS! First try!

Now I only have about four more big sets like that. But it's heartening to see that I'm on the right track. Sleeeep. I might sleeeeep tonight.

Continued progress - now the new query that used to work this afternoon (um, er, yesterday afternoon) is working again! That was a lot of small stuff to get right.

I can CREATE TASKS now. Bwa ha ha ha haaaaaa. I've gotten back to functionality we had somewhere around last June (2000, not 2001).

They'll, um, er, they'll never die, so that's a little bit of a problem...

...putting the rest of these puzzle pieces back together...

OK, they get created, they die. The load queries even agree about it. Now to make it multiprocessor-enabled again.

Only a couple more things to do. The remaining chunks are smaller than the ones I've finished. I'm getting VERY sleepy, and I'm not looking forward to staying alert through an entire evening of square dance calling tonight, but I'm very encouraged that I've gotten this far. Wow, what a lot I can get done in a quiet night. (Of course, it's not quiet around the office any more: everyone else came in!) If I can just keep up this pace for a few more hours...

Boy did I ever hit the wall. My typing is clumsy, my eyes focus very slowly, and I have the IQ of a turnip.

Too bad, 'cause I was doing OK until early this afternoon.

I always have to wonder, looking at the big picture, whether working through the night is a net win. This time, I still suspect it was. I never would have been this productive in the middle of the work day with people all over the place distracting me. But it's incredible to see how useless I am now. (I just took a nap, so I know I'll improve a little...) Wish I were younger. :-)

It's working on all the processors now! I have achieved EXACTLY THE SAME set of capabilities that the software had Tuesday evening. All the flaws, all the features. Except now, of course, it's totally reorganized and I can implement the new stuff. Before, the new stuff was *impossible* to do. Now, it should take less than a day to do.

YAYYYYYY!
