Some days, life just seems pointless.
I think on days like that I should make sure to pet several cats.

Some people share; maybe you could pet a friend's cat. :-)
IIRC you have children, yes? Some parents seem to derive much happiness from their kid's smile... of course, saying "dad needs you to smile now" doesn't always work. Sigh.
