Let's say I had access to a Star-Trek-style transporter. Limited range; can't use it for interplanetary travel. Can move me and anything I can carry, eg change of clothes. Each time I got zapped to a new location, it'd cost me twenty bucks. What would I do with it?

1. This week: Commute between Cleveland, where my mom is helping care for my grandmother, and here. Attend the funeral should it occur.

2. Go to Sterling Vineyards and purchase a couple bottles of their Malvasia Bianca.

3. After the holiday fuss: Visit Rick and split one of those bottles with him. Depart when he gets annoying. Visit [livejournal.com profile] wcg and split another with him. Depart whenever. After all, for another twenty bucks I can come back at another convenient time. Visit [livejournal.com profile] abz6598 and ask whether or not he drinks wine. Depart whenever.

4. Go to Minden and take a few refresher lessons in gliders.

5. Visit the space station, briefly. If I'm not killed on sight, ask if there's anything people want me to bring them.

6. Long term: Take EMT training and volunteer for weird rescue missions.

There's frustration and sadness both, perhaps in equal measures. My grandmother has cancer (again) and is in enormous pain; it would be a mercy if she could go soon. My mother is helping clean up her various bodily fluids and dealing with a pack of relatives I'd write off if it were me. Even were I there, I couldn't do a thing about it, really, which is one of life's tougher lessons sometimes. :-(
