Let's say I had access to a Star-Trek-style transporter. Limited range; can't use it for interplanetary travel. Can move me and anything I can carry, eg change of clothes. Each time I got zapped to a new location, it'd cost me twenty bucks. What would I do with it?

1. This week: Commute between Cleveland, where my mom is helping care for my grandmother, and here. Attend the funeral should it occur.

2. Go to Sterling Vineyards and purchase a couple bottles of their Malvasia Bianca.

3. After the holiday fuss: Visit Rick and split one of those bottles with him. Depart when he gets annoying. Visit [livejournal.com profile] wcg and split another with him. Depart whenever. After all, for another twenty bucks I can come back at another convenient time. Visit [livejournal.com profile] abz6598 and ask whether or not he drinks wine. Depart whenever.

4. Go to Minden and take a few refresher lessons in gliders.

5. Visit the space station, briefly. If I'm not killed on sight, ask if there's anything people want me to bring them.

6. Long term: Take EMT training and volunteer for weird rescue missions.

Take me with you? :-)

Can I carry you? ;-)

If I can move OTHER people, the possibilities multiply!

Should I refrain from commenting?

I'm now picturing C5 level calling, invovling large distances, cellphones, and many teleportation devices...

On another note - are you going to answer your email? :->
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 04:33 pm (UTC)
Uh oh, what email? Better send it again, or ping me with a subject line. It probably dropped off my radar.
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 05:14 pm (UTC)
Yes, find the email (if it's the one I think it is).

Wanna meet me and [livejournal.com profile] indyansel?? *waggles eyebrows suggestively**
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 06:07 pm (UTC)
*leer* Sure! Though I'm hesitant to make plans for the coming weeks, as I may just have to drop them. A pox on uncertainty, sez I.
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 06:16 pm (UTC)
I got a leer!!!! I got a leer!!!!

Well, plan on making it, and if you have to drop them, we'll understand.
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 06:33 pm (UTC)
Between now and the seventh of January, I have exactly four days left where it's worth making any plans. Just gotta figure out how to divvy 'em up. :-)

Hmm, separate post coming, I can tell.

Sunday, December 8th, 2002 06:36 pm (UTC)
Aw crud, I just figured out where you are. Disregard previous idiocy. Indianapolis, eh? Hrm. Tricky...
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 06:44 pm (UTC)
Yeahbut, we land at SFO Thursday night.... ;)
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 06:06 pm (UTC)
Ah, got the e-mail, thanks! Will respond now :-)

I didn't want to ask about the letters you wrote earlier, but I could tell there was serious sadness there. I'm sorry you can't be there with them. *hugs* offered.
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 02:07 pm (UTC)
There's frustration and sadness both, perhaps in equal measures. My grandmother has cancer (again) and is in enormous pain; it would be a mercy if she could go soon. My mother is helping clean up her various bodily fluids and dealing with a pack of relatives I'd write off if it were me. Even were I there, I couldn't do a thing about it, really, which is one of life's tougher lessons sometimes. :-(

You know, I actually like this transporter-thingy question....makes a nice quiz.

I dont normally drink, but depending on the company I could have a tiny bit of wine...although I'm sure I'd find your presence intoxicating all by its lonesome...

I came thiiiiiiiiiis close to EMT training...the class filled by the time I was second in line at registration. I still want to learn EMT, search/rescue, extractions (rope, cave, etc), and a few other useful-in-an-apocalypse skills.

By the by, regarding your earlier post....alone vs. lonely. Theres a difference. But Im sure you knoew that....

Oh, and, uhm....a visit to scenic MT might prove to do wonders for your self-esteem and sense of worth. (Think of it as Disneyland for the adults)

I can definitely vouch for that. I go whenever I can, even when I end up nearly totaling a car by hitting a deer.

Huh, didn't think of it as a quiz. Might have been much more creative if I had. ("Teleport myself to 15,000 feet to experience free fall. Zap self back home when parachute would be required.") So hey, do the quiz, Senor Juan de Montana! Inquiring minds want to know! :-)

Agreed, on the difference btw. alone and lonely. I have a small need for alone-time. Most people around me seem to need/want more time alone than I do. I like being with people... usually in small groups or one on one. When I get too much alone time I get mopey.

So, what major airport is nearest you, in case I want to disown my family and flee for MT? (Or in case I want to introduce a few over-the-wall cases to Commander Zero? heh heh.)
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 05:39 pm (UTC)
This one is about 15 minutes from Firebase Juan. Additionally, I can usually be found at N 46 51' 11.9" / W 114 00' 41.6" (leave a chalk X on the door and check back an hour later.)

And, as an aside, I'm reeeaaallllyyy good at keeping secrets.

Gotcha. I see Northwest flies there, which means I can get there. Coolness.
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 06:23 pm (UTC)
They got me there back in July, IND -> MSP -> MSO. Nice, smallish airport, IIRC.
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 05:41 pm (UTC)
Y'know, at $20 a pop, I'd be tempted to use it to get to work and back home every day, if it were generally available for use.

Malvasia Bianca. Gotta remember that...

Malvasia Bianca. Gotta remember that...

The problem is, you can only get the Sterling Malvasia Bianca *at* the winery.

:::reverb voice:::

Come to California, Bill...

:-D
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 06:08 pm (UTC)
Bill, she's very good at luring. She hasn't let up on us, although she hasn't used the *reverb voice* on us yet. :-)
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 06:11 pm (UTC)
Kathy, you just need to find some land, and build a HUGE house, and we'll all come to live there, as long as you cook occasionally :)
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 06:17 pm (UTC)
A commune with Kathy as the chef? We're so there!
Sunday, December 8th, 2002 06:14 pm (UTC)
Hey, yeah. If you work per-hour and you're worth more than (commute / 1hr) * 20, it's easily a win, not even factoring in the emotional gain if you use it for more free time instead of for more work.

Awright, physicists, let's get cracking on this!
Monday, December 9th, 2002 08:13 am (UTC)
May I toss this idea at my friends (in my journal) and refer to your entry here?

A.
who thinks it's utterly nifty!
Monday, December 9th, 2002 10:30 am (UTC)
Ooo, feel free, and thank you for the compliment! :-)
Monday, December 9th, 2002 01:03 pm (UTC)
Get to live with my family in a huge cheap farmhouse in the middle of nowhere, hang out in New York, go to school (and parties!) in the Bay Area, and still get one night a week with [livejournal.com profile] australian_joe. (That's a time thing, not a distance thing; even if I were living next door, I don't think the partners he lives with now would be keen on giving up much more than that.)

I'm very sorry to hear about what's going on with your grandmother, and you and she and your mother are in my thoughts.
Tuesday, December 10th, 2002 05:23 am (UTC)
Visit people, of course! At $20 a pop I could afford to spend every weekend with someone different.

'See places' is in there too, but (possibly excluding space trips) it comes a distant second to visit people.
