I'm discovering that if I'm going to be finicky about using Goodreads to record every book I read, I'm going to want an alter ego on there.

Yeah, I'm slow on the uptake sometimes. :)

Goodreads has been adamant for years that they will NOT create a way to make a "shelf" (or your reading status of a particular book) private. And I'm not sure I need people knowing I've read up on embarrassing medical conditions or self-help topics or bedroom activities.

I suppose at least it boosts their apparent user base. :)

oh, good point! wonder if there's some sort of self-hostable alternative available.

Yuck. I use Google Keep to keep track of what I read for my own purposes.

It's Google's note-taking program. I will not kid you that it's the best note-taking program I've ever used, but it's the most readily accessible one. If you click the tic-tac-toe board in the upper right on the Gmail page, and then click More at the bottom, and then Even More from Google, it's an orange-ish icon. Also good for keeping track of headaches, responses to different medications, and hopefully only one or two more periods.

I'm sure it works just as well. You could keep track of your book list that way.

It would gripe my tiny little OCD soul, too, but it would gripe me more not to be able to separate things out in different accounts.
