When I worked overnight shifts in spacecraft ops, 3:30 was the worst. By 4:00 there was a faint sense of hope that dawn would come.

Oh Lordy yes. Overnights in emergency vet med are like that too, with the shadow of knowledge that 5:30 or so is when everyone wakes up and notices that their dog has been busy trying to die all night. (Edit: Those shifts end at 8AM.)
