Last night C4 dancing went pretty well. We slowed the tape way down so that the people with the lowest energy levels could keep up, which meant that my brain had ample time to work. :-) Jonathan brought brownies with almond extract tossed into 'em. Mmmmmmmmmm. So much for THAT diet.

Afterward, Rob and I discussed some painful stuff -- didn't come to any resolution but at least got to a point where we felt like we were "on the same team", searching together for a good way to deal with it. That was cool. Also he rubbed my VERY SORE neck and shoulders, and well I'll stop with the details at this point, with the result that I have had very little sleep but my spine is a bit better this morning. All of that is pretty cool too.

Lunch with [livejournal.com profile] ambar soon, then (skipping over the boring stuff like work) dinner with Rob, then hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] gs. I do so like skipping over the boring stuff like work. I would like my life to have a fast forward button (and a rewind, and a pause).

C4 is a black belt in square dancing. Almost everyone who does it is a computer nerd. The learning curve is shaped like the side of a house: the first part is a doozy, straight up, and then (once you have studied enough that you can go out to open dances and actually practice) you get to go up a 45 degree incline from there.

I am somewhere between half and three-quarters of the way up the side of the house. I've tried to learn this before, and fallen off every time; I might just make it to the roof this time around.

I love it. Of course. :-)

(shakes head, respectfully) wow, that's the kind of square dancing with 1200+ separate moves, right? [livejournal.com profile] 7patches talked about something like that at the pool party.

Yeah, that's it. I think you can get by with about a thousand; some are rare. Until you learn those thousand, though, you can't go to dances, which means you really have to memorize!

Fortunately, every so often someone gets together "tape groups" -- small groups of people who dance to tape-recordings of live dances -- for people to learn by doing. I'm in two such things. We stop the tape a LOT. :-)

My husband, [livejournal.com profile] the_ogre just clued me in that you are a Challenge dancer and caller. I have seen your responses to[livejournal.com profile] mactavish, but I haven’t met you.
I did Modern Western Squares for 17 years, mostly at Tech Squares. I also did Round Dancing. I got up to C2 with More Kids, the 2nd generation of Challenge dancers at MIT. Then I moved on to Contra Dancing and Morris Dancing. I moved to the SF Bay Area 9 years ago.
I would like to talk with you off-line about JDS and other people we might know in common, if you wish. My email is in my profile.

Happy Dancing!
