Bread!

I can sorta see why people might cook. I love to bake, and that probably gives some of the same bennies. Yummy smells! Anticipation of exactly the kind of food I had my heart set on! No need (well, presuming you went to the grocery store earlier) to leave the house in the pounding rain!

On the "cooking" side of things, the bean soup is starting to smell mighty nice. That'll go well with the bread dough that's still in the fridge waiting its turn to rise and bake. (See, baking always has to come into it, with me. It's the part I can do well. (Is fondue therefore baking?))

I have the other half of the bread dough in the oven, proofing. I'll start to bake it in probably ten minutes or so. And then I get to shred cheeeeeeeeeeese, and by the time the bread is done and slightly cooled, I'll get to dip it in fondue.

...oh don't go out tonight;
there's a bread dough on the rise...

Mmmmm, I love baking bread. I have been working with sourdough lately, and I love what I've been coming up with.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2008-02-24 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Nice! I wish I were more of a sourdough fan myself; it seems more natural somehow, baking with strains people have kept alive for the purpose for generations.

>.<

I hope your bread turns out better than that line!

I can't help it. It's what's stuck in my head!

[identity profile] wordweaverlynn.livejournal.com 2008-02-24 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
And now in mine.

But I'm a serious bread baker (I wear gloves these days to cover my eczema), and I am happy to have a theme song for baking.

there's a bread dough on the rise...

Better than the version that usually gets stuck in my head: "There's a bathroom on the right..." ;-)

At least that one has the right vowels. ;-)

I'm not the only one?
Good to know...

You know, it's like a gateway drug. Bread baking leads to making soups and then before you know it you're growing your own herbs.

Get help while you can.

*GRIN*

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2008-02-24 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, I can handle my drug. I've been baking for YEARS and I ain't no cook yet! :-)

On the other hand, I would so grow rosemary to put in breads. In my opinion there is no more divine flavor to add to a bread than rosemary.

See? See???? You're looking for ways to fool yourself.

Denial isn't just a river in Egypt.

BAKER! Not COOK! La la la la I can't hear you!

You can't put me into bread

[identity profile] spindle-rose.livejournal.com 2008-02-24 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
That wouldn't taste very good at all.

You do live in the perfect climate for growing rosemary, though. Go to the garden center and find a nice bushy specimen, put it into a pot with nice acidic soil, and park it somewhere outside where it will get good sun and moderate moisture. Then snip as needed for breads, soups, roasted potatoes, and whatever else strikes your fancy.

Yes, putting Rosemary into bread would be a very bad idea, while putting rosemary into bread is lovely. :)

Rosemary bushes will happily grow completely untended here. There is an... ongoing discussion between Rob and me about whether rosemary bushes are "dark and ugly and scraggly looking" (him) or "lovely-smelling and so cute when they bloom" (me). So far, the net result of this discussion is that no action has been taken, which means we still have ivy in the front yard, which we BOTH hate!

There are two kinds of rosemary: trailing and upright. If you get upright, it won't look as scraggly.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2008-02-24 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I like how trailing looks, but eh, I think for Rob the main point is "dark". *sigh*. One of these days I'm going to wait for him to be gone for a weekend...

[CJ looks around furtively, noting that Rob is currently gone for the weekend]

...and dig up all that ivy and plant a rosemary bush or two. Even if he doesn't like the very deep green of it, a bush of it has got to be better than all that ivy!

Plant something light green and flowery with it and call it a compromise.

He's going to be gone for a couple weeks in early March... hmm... :-)

Should our paths eventually cross, and I do hope they will madame, I will remember that pun. I'm not sure what I'll be able to do it by then, but I should have stopped groaning at the very least.

As for baking smells - totally addictive. Given my lack of culinary skill, I usually settle for passing by the bakery!

Okay. I occasionally step in for fresh scones, or muffins, or cookies...

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2008-02-24 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, but... [makes sure the cook-type-people can't hear me] baking's so EASY! To me, cooking is unfathomable; it uses expensive things like meat, or things that don't keep like fresh veg, and if you goof up you get something nasty or even toxic. With baking, you start out only with yummy things, and you have to work hard to get results that taste bad.

Should our paths eventually cross, I hope to hand you something scrumptious. :)

Baking Bread is something I love to do. But we never eat enough of it. So I bake for Parties, that way it doesn't have a chance to go bad.
I love collecting bread books too. I have a bunch in the kitchen bookshelves.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2008-02-24 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Today I made a little (14"?) loaf in the shape of a baguette. Ordinarily I could eat all of that, even with cheese on it, assuming I hadn't had much else that day. But today for some reason I wasn't very hungry. So I have leftovers even from that!

I only have two bread books really, but neither one has everything I want.

You've just laid out exactly what the COMFORT in comfort food is all about!

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2008-02-24 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I also get most of those comforts if someone ELSE is the cook. But I do enjoy baking. :-)
