Peace of mind

Within the last day or two I read a quote that went something like

"If it costs you your peace of mind, the cost is too high."

Naturally I can't find it again now. Still, whether I can find the quote or not, the concept is something to keep in mind.

That's a very good thing to keep in mind!

It's good food for thought, too. Some things are indeed worth more than peace of mind. (Or, to put it another way, without some things -- for example, a mostly clean conscience -- we can't have much peace of mind at all.) Where do we draw that line? It's a good question.

The quote's only true for people who actually have at least a piece of mind.

I know some people who prefer "peace of mind" way, way too much over Doing The Right Thing.

Yeah, like I mentioned about the conscience: for you and me, and I hope for much of humanity, Doing The Right Thing matters to us. I guess this quote, like many other pithy quotes, applies best to some particular group. It matters who you are, inside.

Totally.

Thanks for posting that :-)

You were one of the people I thought might have posted it originally. (That's a compliment.) :-)

It sounds like something I would say in a navel gazing moment, but I know I haven't said it recently, at least :-)

And the only thing you cannot trade for your heart's desire is your heart :).

That too! :) Those are very related, I think.

You beat me to it -- I was coming in here just to post that Bujold quote.

[identity profile] layer.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
definitely a good one.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
How best to live up to it, now there's the rub.

I don't know that one, but it reminds me of a Miles Vorkosigan quote:

"The only thing you can't trade for your heart's desire is your heart."

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I read these two as saying a lot of the same thing.

Nice sentiment ... where do I turn in my teenager? ;)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHA! :-) Except you wouldn't have peace of mind if you did that either. Man, sometimes you're just stuck! :-)

and naturally you'll have no peace till you find the quote :)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Maaaaybe. :) I think I might actually be getting better at that sort of thing. :)

"This quote may not apply to people who have anxiety disorder and never had a peace of mind in the first place."

[identity profile] recordersmith.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been bumping into this here and there lately in terms of cost assessments..It's often worth spending effort and money on things in order to bring about peace of mind and reduce stress instead of getting frazzled trying to come up with a cheaper solution. (applying this to my current furnace problems..getting very close to just replacing the thing instead of continuing to try to get it fixed...it'll be pricey, but I'm really tired of going to bed every night not knowing if the house will have heat when I wake up)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. This comes up in investment decisions, too, all the time: the attempt to put a dollar price on peace of mind. It's a hard thing to do.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. I wonder if I have some kind of anxiety-related disorder or whether I have simply made way too many "purchases" over the years where the cost was my peace of mind. Without a professional looking at me from the outside, I could see it both ways.
