Today is the twentieth anniversary of my first date with [livejournal.com profile] rfrench.

Strictly speaking, it wasn't precisely a date; we were at a friend's twenty-first birthday party, and a backrub chain broke out, as such things tend to do at college parties involving alcohol, and Rob made sure to sit in front of me, and I noticed that here was a guy who was nifty. That's pretty much the sum total of our first date. Be that as it may, when we later tried to decide how to count the time, that's the event we agreed upon as the beginning of it all.

Twenty years later, nearly three thousand miles away from that dorm room, I have two dozen beautiful red rosebuds in a vase, and an adorable soft teddy bear, sitting on my desk here at work. We've been through several moves and two different separations lasting many months each; we've learned to call square dances and we've learned to fly airplanes; we've been awfully darn broke and we've been through the dot com boom when we thought we were multimillionaires; we've traveled together, to Europe in health and to Japan when vilely ill. I'm sure we've seen each other at our best, and while I hope for Rob's sake he hasn't seen me at my worst, I think he has. In just over two weeks we'll have been together exactly half my life. I didn't realize until today that we've already passed half of his.

Happy twenty years, Rob. May we make just as many good memories in the next twenty as we did in these. (And maybe a little less drama in that next round, eh? Now that we know each other a bit :-).)

Happy Anniversary!

Mark & I have quite a ways to go before we've been together for half of either of our lives -- but that's just 'cause we started much later than you two.

Don't forget that you're older, too. :-)

What was that? Speak up & stop mumbling.
