Once again, I have apparently managed to create a meal my cats would give their souls to have. I wish someone were here to take a picture of this. Sitting at the white-hot focus of three fur-covered poses of intense covetitude is making me crack up.

(I am sure the key point is that it involves cheese. Oddly, none of the cats will actually eat the tidbits I've offered, though Jackie did spend some time alternating between swatting it and industriously licking her toes. But they're all sure I've got amazingly good stuff here somewhere.)

That's so funny! Val does that too. He practically climbs up the kitchen cabinets trying to get to whatever I've got on the counter, because it might be something he wants! It's hilarious when I offer him a bit of something horribly yucky (like a piece of an orange) and he squinches up his face and backs away. He couldn't say eeeuuuwwwww! any more clearly if he could talk!

He loves anything leafy. (Which is why I no longer have any plants.) Now that it's summer, he watches me like a hawk when I husk fresh corn, and if I take my eyes off him for a second he'll grab a husk out of the trash can. Last Thursday I was feeling really poorly when I came in from the farmer's market, so I put the lighter bags on the counter and just left the two heavier bags on the floor while I sat down at the table with a glass of water and the newspaper to rest.

Then I noticed a sound ... rustle, rustle, rustle. It stopped, and then I started hearing a different sound, so I thought I'd better go check and dragged myself onto my feet. Val had managed to get an entire ear of corn out of the bag, had lugged the big, heavy ear into the family room, and was busy chowing down on the husks! When he heard me coming he started chewing as fast as he could because he knew perfectly well he wasn't supposed to have it and I was going to take it away from him!

He likes the corn kernels too, but the husk is his favorite part.

Friday, on the other hand, couldn't care less about what I'm cooking. He won't eat anything that doesn't come out of a can or package labeled "Cat Food". He's not even interested in fresh cooked chicken or salmon! (Although he likes the flavors just fine if they come from a can with a picture of a cat on it.)

The only people food he'll eat is tuna juice. He's somewhat interested in the flakes of tuna that are in the water, but after he laps up the water he doesn't bother to scrub the bowl. Some foods he considers edible, even though he doesn't personally want any. But many things he doesn't even acknowledge as food at all.

Except chocolate. He thinks chocolate smells like shit -- literally. If I'm sitting on the couch or the bed, break off a piece and put the rest down, he sniffs it carefully, then turns around and tries to bury it! Then he comes back to check it, sniffs it carefully -- nope, still there -- and goes to the other side and tries to bury it! He'll keep it up until I take the evil-smelling stuff away. He's never done that with any other food -- only chocolate. Weird.

Cats are so funny!

really, deep down in our hearts, we keep them around for the sheer entertainment value :)
