Here are the users LJ believes are most similar to me in terms of interests.

1 joedecker 15.911
2 aviator 14.377
3 amberskye 11.367
4 quistis 11.111
5 jeremycking 10.142
6 khisanth 9.217
7 bansidhe 9.206
8 devon 9.173
9 jdumars 9.043
10 sebab 8.956

I don't know any of them except Joe. In fact, I don't know anybody in my first hundred except Joe. And that super-high match score there -- 15.911 -- is only after he edited his interests list; he'd forgotten something important, I think. :-) Previously, no match scores were 15 or above.

My next closest bunch of friends appear at 118-122, all tied at 5.809: rampling, gs, mactavish, sinboy, cassidyrose.

Other people are seeing match scores up around 45. Maybe no one out there is even remotely like me. Hmm.

Or maybe I just have a very very short interests list :-)

You have a short interests list. Look at what happens when you run a a search for people near [livejournal.com profile] gs. His interest list is tiny, and has no "very common" interests...
Monday, April 1st, 2002 03:32 pm (UTC)
I'm glad it's just the interest list that's tiny. . . . :)

(Dang, was that my outside voice?)
Tuesday, April 2nd, 2002 01:52 pm (UTC)
Maybe he'd let me measure...

Oops, that was my outside voice too!
Tuesday, April 2nd, 2002 04:42 pm (UTC)
Sure. You could measure me in 'hands', like they do horses :-)

The number of hands probably depends on their size. I could say "your mileage may vary", but that would clearly be exaggerating :-)

When I need an ego boost, I measure myself in angstroms. (That's plural, by the way. Please don't let me be misunderstood.)
Tuesday, April 2nd, 2002 05:32 pm (UTC)
Let's take six inches as average. Perhaps I will get to measure you later. :-) Six inches would be:

.0000947 miles
.0007576 furlongs
1,524,000,000 angstroms
.000000000001019 a.u.
152.4 millimeters
.00003157 leagues

I am clearly underutilized at my job if I have time to do this.

And, of course, six inches would be one hand full-time and another hand part time. That sounds just about perfect.

Hey, he at least gets TWO people scoring greater than 15. Awright. Time to update my interests list... What am I missing? (wandering off to go crib from Joe)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 03:35 pm (UTC)
Yeah, but I think it's all from two very uncommon interets. I'm worth just under 6 points, and I'm guessing that HAI is worth a few more than that.

Monday, April 1st, 2002 03:39 pm (UTC)
Hey Joe, for potential higher matches:

dabney hovse = dabney house?
jean-michael jarre = jean-michel jarre?
Monday, April 1st, 2002 03:44 pm (UTC)
The first one is intentional (the carving on the building uses the Roman orthography where U's are drawn as V's, this turned into a meme where folks will even pronounce "hoves" to sort of rhyme with "mauves". Google shows 30+ hits on "Dabney Hovse", including for the home page of the house. Fixed the second, stupid typo on my part..

Thanks!

Monday, April 1st, 2002 03:47 pm (UTC)
Was it you who was in dabney or Joe? What vintage? I know a ton of people who were there... early to mid-nineties. I've been to dab parties. Oosh.
Monday, April 1st, 2002 03:55 pm (UTC)
Joe. Only thing I know about Caltech is that until they meet me, Caltechers only know other Caltechers.
Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:02 pm (UTC)
*spit take* :)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 03:59 pm (UTC)
'twas me. While I was there from 80-84, I know several people from later years as well, perhaps as late as the early 90s. CJ, being smarter, went to MIT. :)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:05 pm (UTC)
*schnork* Nah, I was just from the wrong coast.
Monday, April 1st, 2002 06:59 pm (UTC)
Paul Mineiro, Mike Radford, Dave Benson, Jason Blackader (I think...) Mmm... that's all I know from Dab. Other techers of the same vintage include Alan Low, Alan Chocheran, Myron Ahn, Kate Porter (my fiancee :-)... almost forgot her) Umm... lots of others I guess, but if you know any in that crowd, you'd likely know some of these.
Monday, April 1st, 2002 08:29 pm (UTC)
Mike Radford sounds familiar, in point of fact..
Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:03 pm (UTC)
OK, I cribbed from a few random people. I added biplanes, bisexuality, embedded software, fart jokes, hot tubs, indian food, non-minogamy, Pitts, polyamory, taildraggers, sex positive, wine, zen. Now I recognize four of the people in my top ten: #1 joedecker (29.403), #3 rampling (16.736), #8 sinboy (13.312), and #9 mactavish (12.130).

Embedded software is unique, but fart jokes is not. Hmm. Following some links, I see that ViagAra (note the misspelling) is also not unique. Ah, LJ.
Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:05 pm (UTC)
Worse, I had to add "indian food" to my list after I saw it on yours...
Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:18 pm (UTC)
The presence of "vindaloo" on your list was what gave me the idea.
Monday, April 1st, 2002 08:29 pm (UTC)
I have to say, I'm thrilled that there's a fart joke category so that you don't have to be alone there... :)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 09:20 pm (UTC)
Prithee, what is "non-minogamy?" The more common word begining with the prefix "mono-" for one or singular isn't terribly noteworthy, but the prefix, "min-" implies that you are terribly concerned with size. Tell us more. :-)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 10:16 pm (UTC)
A typo. I did get it right in the actual interests list.

Or I'm just covering up the fact I'm a size queen ;-)
Tuesday, April 2nd, 2002 01:55 pm (UTC)
Half the people on the polyamory and bisexual communities are "non-monagomous."
Monday, April 1st, 2002 03:28 pm (UTC)
In my case, it's not because we don't have common interests, but rather because I haven't felt like informing LiveJournal of them. The one common interest we have that LiveJournal is aware of is joedecker (http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml?int=joedecker) :-)

Looking at your interest list, I could probably add another 10 common interests. I suspect that would have an effect.
Monday, April 1st, 2002 03:36 pm (UTC)
Which ten? Inquiring minds want to know!
Monday, April 1st, 2002 03:58 pm (UTC)
You'll have to make me tell you ;-)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:12 pm (UTC)
Okay, I added a few (though not as many as I could) and I've made your top 3. Woohoo! You're my #1. (Just thought you'd like to know)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:21 pm (UTC)
You're my #1.

Oh, how roMANtic! *flutters eyelashes*
Monday, April 1st, 2002 03:37 pm (UTC)
Hey, don't feel *too* unique, girl, my best match only came back with a 9.1! Of course, I don't really *have* any interest ... ;)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 03:49 pm (UTC)
Hmmm... well, I matched your (original...) list on about three of ten, but on none of the quirky ones... what's valrhona? An Australian chocolate bar?

Monday, April 1st, 2002 03:56 pm (UTC)
A super-multi-licious deep dark chocolate. Mmmmmm. Now I have to meet you so that I can corrupt you to the valrhona side. :-)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:06 pm (UTC)
Deep dark chocolate? (pounds head on table) Ahhh... now I'll be thinking of that for the rest of the afternoon... mmm. Yes, we must meet... besides, then I can try to beg you to fly me in your plane!
Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:19 pm (UTC)
Ahhh... now I'll be thinking of that for the rest of the afternoon...

My work here is done. :-)

(I don't have a plane any more but I'm itching to get checked out in some rentals so I can get back in the air!)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:07 pm (UTC)
Lovely...now I have to add that to my interest list! (To go with the many pounds of valrhona waiting to be made into truffles at home.)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:40 pm (UTC)
(To go with the many pounds of valrhona waiting to be made into truffles at home.)

Ooooh! My ex-partner (and still good friend, and now co-worker) does an annual orgy of truffle making for 4-5 days near Thanksgiving. I wonder if I still have the picture of her balancing her own weight in chocolate...

More importantly, I assume you've found that it's possible to by 3kg "reams" of the different varieties, yes? It's a lot more efficient than trying to buy lots of little bars...

Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:55 pm (UTC)
Oh yes! I routinely order from Gourmail (http://www.gourmail.com/), which has advertised in Chocolatier magazine from the very beginning.
Monday, April 1st, 2002 05:01 pm (UTC)
Oh good. I've seen people "do it the hard way", and it's just painful. And there's something magical about holding a 3kg lump of chocolate..... *drool*
Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:00 pm (UTC)
A French manufacturer of fine dark chocolate. (http://www.valrhona.com/)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 04:08 pm (UTC)
(slaps forehead) I bought a bar of that once at Trader Joes, at the Pruneyard!
Monday, April 1st, 2002 07:13 pm (UTC)
Nah, my highest match-ups are in the 17.mumble range. And I have a lot of weird interests. (Just not shared by anyone else on LJ. :-)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 10:16 pm (UTC)
Ooo, next free moment I should go crib interests from you. :-)
Monday, April 1st, 2002 07:26 pm (UTC)
I just tweaked my list - and the highest I get is about 15, and yet when I read the bios of the top 1-2 people, I don't see that much in common.

Weird.
