So that plumbing problem for which I "took the evening off" turned out to be a little harder than we'd thought.

The guy with the snake gave up after two hours of fruitless effort. No laundry Monday night. Surely the guys with the high-pressure water jet would be able to fix it the next day.

I came home tonight and saw "DO NOT USE" signs on the washer and the kitchen sink. The largest clue, though, was an incomprehensible diagram on a sheet of paper lying on the clothes dryer. Somebody had drawn that for Rob.

Turns out the whole drainage side for the north end of the house is ruptured. The crawlspace is flooded. (It was galvanized pipe. All you homeowners out there are nodding, aren't you? The corrosion was the only thing holding some of the joints together, and the snake was just enough to knock things loose.)

No laundry or clean dishes until January. I put the dirty dishes in the freezer. They'll keep. And no more evenings off while the plumbers are working; the office building has bathrooms and a shower!

Yikes !! You guys are just having WAY too much fun lately. Hope you can get this all fixed without further horrendous problems.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 04:38 pm (UTC)
Thanks! If "it never rains but it pours," then I hope the storm is over soon and we get some sunny days.

How awful -- I feel for you! When my place flooded in March, water also flooded part of the crawlspace. Not wanting water to just sit there (to either rot anything or breed mosquitoes), I borrowed a wet/dry vac from my brother and extracted several gallons of water out of the clay soil crawlspace.

Maybe laundry to a laundry mat or a friend's house for clean clothes before January?

Eat out or use paper / plastic disposable stuff for dishes?

At least January isn't too far away now. Good luck!

(PS: I have not forgotten about the spare tire or chains and Toyota books -- just been busy and working lots of nights. Maybe after Xmas would be a good time to arrange a pick up?)
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 04:41 pm (UTC)
The plumbers said that where the water is, it's okay; it will seep into the soil and not damage stuff. PHEW.

We're out of town for two weeks starting tomorrow, so fortunately we can do any laundry we need (and any eating!) at my parents' place or Rob's parents' place.

*nod* I've been busy too. I still have the stuff with "your name on it" (figuratively). We're back in town late Jan. 2; perhaps some time early in the New Year.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 07:17 pm (UTC)
I'm glad to hear you'll have the laundry, eating, and such covered... and that the water looks like it'll seep harmlessly into the ground. :) Good luck with the re-piping job in January.

My mother's had good luck with the household pipes (except for a repeated dishwasher/sink clog)-- what happened here was that when we had an AC installed (many years ago, to keep my grandmother cool), we found that not only was the furnace cracked but most of the duct work under the house had fallen down on the ground and rusted through (heating the soil).

Yes, January should be fine for the Toyota stuff -- we can figure out more timing then.
Friday, December 22nd, 2006 12:18 am (UTC)
Oh yikes. That furnace crack sounds like a very expensive problem! :-(
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 08:05 am (UTC)
If either or both of you need to borrow a shower until your plumbing is working, you're welcome to come over to our place.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 04:42 pm (UTC)
Thanks! The worst of it will be when the work is being done. We have showers now (they're on the south end of the house, slightly lower on the hill than the north end, thus we can use them for now). On Jan 3 or 4 or so, though, Rob may very well take you up on that.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 08:13 am (UTC)
Geez, that's the suck indeed. :(
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 04:43 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I'm not fond of it myself. At least we're out of town starting NOW and we can get it dealt with quickly (I HOPE!!) when we return.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 08:21 am (UTC)
Best of luck with this--at least it was after the party.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 04:44 pm (UTC)
Yes indeed! I'm very glad it didn't happen Friday night. UGH.

Lots and lots of luck to YOU, too, right now. **hug**
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 09:31 am (UTC)
*HUG* Hopefully, it will be able to be all fixed sooner then expected. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 04:45 pm (UTC)
Thanks! Gah, what a mess. I'm very fortunate that Rob was able to arrange for the plumber and be home yesterday to meet him.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 11:56 am (UTC)
Ouch.

Is the south side OK? Is there at least one working toilet in the house? If not, you may want to consider checking into a hotel for a week or two.

I bought home warranty coverage which I hope would cover things like this -- it did cover replacing a toilet. You might want to see if your homeowner's insurance can help at all. Assuming you have any.

I'm impressed that your dirty dishes fit in the freezer. I'm not sure more than one plate and one cup would fit in ours. Sorry I live so far, or I'd be happy to let you run dishes through our dishwasher.

Ah -- an evening showerer! I'd have evenings off because I'd get up in the morning and go in and shower.

Re laundry -- for a long time I had my laundry picked up and delivered by a wash-and-fold laundry service that charged a dollar a pound. I loved it. Takes a lot less of your time, and probably not a lot more money, given machine prices, than a laundromat. Just a thought.

I hope this doesn't cost you too much, and that you get a great new system out of it.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 04:49 pm (UTC)
Yep, south side is OK and we have a toilet and shower (until they start ripping pipes out).

I admit freezer space is VERY tight. There are still cookies, cheese, and Li'l Smokies in there from the party! :-) Fortunately, there was only one meal. We're about to leave town for two weeks, so the kitchen won't see any use until we're back.

I'm a morning showerer, but I like having toilets. As soon as work begins, I'll be very happy to stay in the office. :-)
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 12:20 pm (UTC)
Yikes. More eating out, I suppose?
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 04:50 pm (UTC)
Fortunately (?) we're about to leave town for two weeks: visiting my family, then visiting Rob's family. We'll eat fine & we can even wash some clothes in Boston. The awkward couple of days will be when we return & they start ripping out pipes.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 02:15 pm (UTC)
OMG...I hope you have kind neighbors that will help you out at least with the dirty dishes and laundry.

Yes, I nodded my head about that...the original irrigation system here was galvanized pipe. Totally rusted through and useless. We tried to get it up and running after moving here 14 years ago and wrote it off as a bad loss.

We had a backup problem about 10 years ago. A former housemate had gotten an unhousebroken dog, and he cleaned up the NUMEROUS messes with paper towels, which he stuffed in the toilet. It was an expensive mess.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 04:53 pm (UTC)
We're about to leave town for two weeks, so dirty dishes and laundry will be a bit less of an issue. THANK GOODNESS.

We're lucky that it broke in this way, on that end of the house, with clean water all over everywhere. The drain pipes for the toilets are also galvanized. We could have had a much worse time of it (and a bad cleanup problem under the house) if those had let go first. This way, we get to replace it all before dumping serious nasty into our crawlspace.

Ugh! Paper towels in the toilet! What was he THINKING? I feel for ya.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 03:10 pm (UTC)
Our plumbing is old - some of it is still lead piping. I was scared to death when we had to have our bathroom snaked recently - the guy was cute but very enthusiastic with that thing, and I was SURE I'd go outside and see it waving through the side of the building. Fortunately, so far no evidence of problems. I second the idea of a hotel - one of those efficiency suites places normally has good weekly or monthly rates. At least you have an excuse now to eat out!
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 04:55 pm (UTC)
We're about to head off to my parents' place and then Rob's folks' place, so we'll be doing even better than eating out. Yay! And yeah, our guy was very enthusiastic with the snake too. I guess for a real blockage, that's what it takes. Man, just when I think I've seen everything (about homes and what can go wrong in the normal course of things), something like this comes along.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 03:10 pm (UTC)
This is when you wonder why you ever wanted to own a home...

Urgle.

So, um, you can't use any bathrooms at home? That's almost worth moving out for...
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 04:56 pm (UTC)
It sure does make renting look attractive right about now!

We can use bathrooms now; they're on the south end, lower on the hill than the broken north end. As soon as we get back in town and get the plumbers to start ripping stuff out, we'll have no bathrooms/showers for probably two days.
Thursday, December 21st, 2006 01:50 am (UTC)
Yeah, that's worth imposing on friends or staying in a hotel for a couple days...
Friday, December 22nd, 2006 12:20 am (UTC)
No kidding. I'm just glad we had bathrooms the last few days AND that we can get this fixed before Rob's foot surgery.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 05:03 pm (UTC)
OMG. You poor dear.

Reminds me of the time that [livejournal.com profile] garybear put a pickaxe through our 1" (yes, that's one inch!) iron water main from the street to the house. On Sunday night at about 5pm. The night before we were hosting a crowd of people for a sort of mini-PPP. Akien and his friend Gene did an AMAZING McGuyver job on the pipe with a tin can lid, some epoxy, and some pipe-clamping material. It lasted 3 weeks till we could get a repair person out.

And not to minimize the stress of this but... at least it didn't happen BEFORE the party!!! o_O

Good luck, and I hope it sorts itself out with minimal stress after you return.
Friday, December 22nd, 2006 12:23 am (UTC)
Oh MAN, that's impressive! I'm glad they could get it to hold for the PPP and the repair wait time.

Yes, at least it didn't happen before the party! I suspect it wouldn't have. I'm lucky we HAD the party, because it was some of the leftovers that caused the jam in the first place, and if that hadn't happened the pipes would likely have burst at a much worse time.
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 05:50 pm (UTC)
My God. Your holiday season has been stunning this year!
Friday, December 22nd, 2006 12:25 am (UTC)
If I were good with words this would be a great comedy essay. As it is, I hope the season will improve from here!
Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 06:18 pm (UTC)
If it's any consolation, your story makes me feel much better about our recent house issues! Yikes.
Friday, December 22nd, 2006 12:26 am (UTC)
*chuckle* Yeah, it's amazing how comforting it is to know that there are others with similar troubles!
Thursday, December 21st, 2006 12:23 am (UTC)
oh god. :( :( :( :( *hugs*

guess this holiday trip is very well-timed! when/how long will you be at Rob's parents'? any chance to meet up? i'm off Sat-tues for xmas and Sat-Mon for new years. i'll email you my contact info.
Friday, December 22nd, 2006 12:30 am (UTC)
At least we have a couple of weeks to wait for the repair guys. No one needs the water in there until we can get on the plumbers' schedule.
Thursday, December 21st, 2006 06:42 am (UTC)
*HUGS* for such a massively annoying string of suckage.
Friday, December 22nd, 2006 12:31 am (UTC)
I love that phrase! I will steal it. "Massively annoying string of suckage." Heh!
