It honestly did not occur to me that the grocery store would be a complete freakin' madhouse two days before Thanksgiving. (I know what it's like one day before, so I don't go.) I don't know whether to be impressed with the ability of my neighbors to plan ahead or grumpy that one day can create so much chaos.

Me, I went today because I need fresh baguettes for Use Up the Cheese Day tomorrow. I figured I'd do my regular shopping at the same time. Silly me. You can imagine what my feet feel like now. It took me nearly two hours to get out of there, and baguettes were just one of the many things they were out of.

Around here, groceries start the insanity the weekend before Thanksgiving, so when I stopped by last night to pick up some rolls on my way home from school, I was braced for it. :-)

Wish I could be part of your Use Up the Cheese Day...

I don't know when the insanity starts because I generally stay away from places prone to insanity. Here we see the downside of that algorithm. :-)

I wish you could, too!

Yeah, we went to the store yesterday as well. Particularly, we went to Walmart. Oops. See, here I thought I'd be avoiding the crowd by going two days before, and getting enough food to last me until Saturday (so I could stay home on Black Friday). I didn't reckon on half the town having the exact same thought at the exact same time. I had to find me a quiet little corner (by the tortillas, which are apparently not Thanksgiving food in Natchtitoches) and remind myself to breathe. :P

Ugh, Walmart! Man, I can't stand that place on a normal day. I don't think I've ever seen anyone in there in a good mood.

Wait. You're in Natchitoches? As in Louisiana?

I spent two years of high school there, at LSMSA. Cool!

There's only one Natchitoches that I know of! (Seriously, on sites like greyhound.com and mapquest.com, I don't even bother typing in the state).

That's cool! My teenagers want to go to the LSMSA next year. How did you like Natchitoches? We've lived here for just over a year now.

I loved it. This was back in '86 and '87, so I don't know how much the town has changed, but I really enjoyed the quiet of the NSU campus and surrounding area. It was fun to walk into town with friends -- we hardly ever needed to drive anywhere, the town was so small. Wonderful place to spend the most potentially turbulent years of high school, really.

I haven't been back there in years, but I hope to go back for my 20th reunion this May.

20 years. Damn. I'm getting old. :-)

Yeah, we went last night, too. At about 6, when all of the people already stressed out from work were trying to get their shopping done.

*shudder*

Ayep, that's about it. Bleagh!

Saturday it was a madhouse, too. We went a little earlier than we usually do, but it was more insane than it should have been, anyway.

Maybe people have the "plan ahead" gene more than I'd've thought!

I wanted to make a nice dinner for Monday's date night but the left turn lane to get to the street that goes to the parking lot entrance to Whole Foods would have taken me three or four light changes to get through. We went out and had lovely food, instead. I can shop on Friday.

If I hadn't already given my word that today would be Use Up the Cheese Day...! Yes indeedy, shopping on Friday sounds very good to me.
