Went to see Dr. Cornelison this afternoon. He showed me everything on my films, pointing out the intact plantar plate and a tiny neuroma (yeah, I have ANOTHER one) and some scar tissue. He instantly discarded his earlier "plantar plate damage" idea, guessed that the neuroma and the scar tissue were at least part of my pain, and when asked why the pain is over HERE and over HERE too, said well he didn't have any good answers and he'd have to think about it some more.
I love a man who doesn't cling to a theory in the face of conflicting evidence. I love that he doesn't make shit up. I love that he takes time to explain and to show me things.
On the other hand, he wants me to try physical therapy, and we know how well THAT has worked over the past three years. I'm very very reluctant to waste time and money on it AGAIN when I STILL don't have a diagnosis. (To his credit, he thought of it as a way to break up scar tissue without surgery. A massage therapist, he said, would likely not be covered by insurance.) He's also coming up with off-label uses for FAA-proscribed drugs, just like Dr. O did. (She wanted to put me on an anti-seizure drug. I said no because if I ever took that I couldn't fly.) I strongly suspect I'm not going to be quite such a model patient any more.
My big remaining hope now is that he's still thinking about this. He may yet come up with another idea.
