Metabothersome

One-True-Way-ism bugs me. It bugs me a lot.

This is in itself a form of OTWism, so it bugs me, too.

[identity profile] airporter.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Existential consequentialism. Oh, my aching head. *grin*

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hee!

See, my form bugs me a lot less than the other forms I see. At least I am trying to be aware of what I'm doing and lessen its impact, making me superior.

Which assumption and conclusion makes me rather an asshole, then, doesn't it? Just as much as everyone else who believes him- or herself superior based on his or her One True Way.

But damn, I hate those smug superiorists...

Gah. At least I'm in good very numerous company.

[identity profile] airporter.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, do keep it up, darlin'. I won't sleep for that tonight.

If you exist right now on your one true path, why then does the existence of another path, not your own, distract you? It's only an asinine assumption if you believe your path is valid for anyone other than yourself. Yet, it may be the superior path in your view, your desire.

And the company is huge.

After all, you do have a really big bible belt in that thar country, don't ya?

Because they won't leave me the hell alone to pursue my path.

After all, you do have a really big bible belt in that thar country, don't ya?

Oh my yes -- and the OTWism is just as thick here in the San Francisco Bay Area where the most vehement are absolutely sure that they don't think and act anything like fundies.

Even me, prob'ly.

[identity profile] airporter.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. By entertaining the arguments of others, if only to attempt conversion, you are inhereently not acting like a fundie.

Devout? Perhaps.

[identity profile] shoutingboy.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Feh. We fundies entertain arguments all the time! We just win 'em, is all.

Perception issue

[identity profile] airporter.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
For fundies: is actual winning as important as the perception of same?

'Cause it doesn't look to me like you're winning all that much these last years. There've been a few or a lot of claimed victories, but nobody (in general) seems much happier, healthier, or wiser. Or safer FWIW.

Shouldn't the One True Way (TM) provide a measure of happiness? What are you fundies doing to fix that, anyway?

[identity profile] dragon-spirit.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's just like the time I wanted to make proseletyzing tracts telling people to ignore proseletyzing tracts.

You can't win sometimes, I tell ya whut.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ain't it the truth? Some days you just can't win for losing!

[identity profile] mactavish.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Brian: Look, you've got it all wrong! You don't NEED to follow ME, You don't NEED to follow ANYBODY! You've got to think for your selves! You're ALL individuals!
The Crowd: Yes! We're all individuals!
Brian: You're all different!
The Crowd: Yes, we ARE all different!
Man in crowd: I'm not.
The Crowd: Shh!

[identity profile] airporter.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Either might work, actually.

A friend summarized this belief as Everything is relative, except this.

;)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's the thing, isn't it? :-)

Hm.
I think it's useful to separate the following kinds of positions:

1) I think my path is correct, but I'm willing and able to engage with you sincerely on the matter if you're interested in trying to convince me otherwise.

2) I think my path is correct and I'm unwilling to sincerely engage in any attempt to convince me otherwise.

3) I think my path is correct and will attempt to engage others in order to convince them of the correctness of my path.

4) I think my path is correct and genuinely do not understand how anyone of normal mental capacity can think otherwise.

5) I don't know if my path is correct or not but it's the best I've got at the moment, and I'm content with that.

6) I don't know if my path is correct or not and will attempt to engage others in order for them to convince me of the correctness of their path.

7) I think my path is correct for me, but that depends on enough of my idiosyncracies that I don't think other people have much of relevance to say on the matter unless they happen to share (or at least understand really well) most of those idiosyncracies.

With the exception of the last one, I think all of those are some flavor or another of OTWism. Some are more objectionable than others.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
5 seems pretty unobjectionable to me, too, and of the rest I sure do get bugged by some far more strongly than by others. There's also a big difference between "I think my path is correct for me" (in just about any of these) and "I think my path is correct for everyone".

[identity profile] hitchhiker.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)

Bertrand Russell might just about disagree with you there :)

One-True-Way-ism is a form of intolerance. Remember, the only thing we need not tolerate is intolerance itself.
