Violets!

Realio trulio I managed to start some violets. Green-thumbed persons, should these be separated into different pots? Is it too late?

Don't move those yet! Keep them moist, keep them well loved and when they are much further along in their growth *then* transplant them to separate pots.

And yay for you! Violets aren't easy. At one time I had 35 violets. I loved them dearly. Nowadays I don't have as much time to care for plants. People keep telling me that orchids take so much work but I find that they love me and are happy in this house and don't take much care.

But oh, I miss my violets.

Thank you! How can I tell when's a good time to separate them out?

Violets seem (to me) very easy. Forget to water them a lot and they're happy. This fits me perfectly, as my main mode for plants is "forget". And now I can start them, too! Woohoo!

See, for some reason if I don't water mine here, they did. Spectacularly.

Let them get a bit crowded (though not too much) and then you can switch them out. They should have at least six or seven leaves apiece before you move them. Smaller and they don't have the "ground coverage" nor root ball to keep in the moisture they need.

Huh - maybe I have a lot less light heating them up and drying them out.

OK, crowded, and 6-7 leaves. I'll wait for at least that. Thanks!

Patience! Encouragement!

Yay for the baby violets!

As the other poster said, they will eventually need to go in separate pots. I did the same as you awhile back (rooted a leaf from a larger plant). Thought you might want to see the result.

Also, the original plant is FINALLY getting flowers. I read somewhere that you need at least 5 "tiers" of leaves for a violet to flower. I guess this is (sort of) proof.

Oh how lovely! Those are beautiful!

Well done!

I'd wait a while before separating them.

Thanks! :)

those can't be violets - everyone knows violets are *blue*!

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-08-21 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Green and fuzzy" just doesn't rhyme, does it? Maybe they'll be blue when they grow up!

[identity profile] hitchhiker.livejournal.com 2006-08-21 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Roses are red
Violets are green and fuzzy
Rhymes are optional
And so is scansion

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-08-21 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHA! A favorite limerick of mine:

There once was a girl from Japan
Whose limericks never would scan.
When she was asked why,
She'd say with a sigh,
"It's because I always try to fit as many syllables into the last line as I possibly can."

[identity profile] hitchhiker.livejournal.com 2006-08-21 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that one too :) (Also, "scansion is optional/ and so is rhyme" would have been better, I think)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-08-21 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
How come? (I'm not seeing the subtlety.)

[identity profile] hitchhiker.livejournal.com 2006-08-21 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The word "rhyme" then comes just where the reader would expect an actual rhyme to be.

Oh excellent! I didn't think of this because I "knew" what was coming. :)
