I realized this evening that no, the world does not need proofreaders. The world does just fine without them.

Having been a tech writer and editor in the past, my eye is immediately drawn to any typographical or grammatical error in a document. PowerPoint presentations are the worst - I'm too busy checking the content to listen to the speaker!

I know the feeling! I don't even check consciously. Errors leap out at me screaming. I'm realizing -- slowly -- that not only are most people not like me in that way, most people don't care or honestly can't tell. And as [livejournal.com profile] apparentparadox writes below, the world bumbles along. I guess it's like the grocery store sign saying some form of produce is point sixty-three cents. Anyone smart enough to know what that really says knows it's wrong and automatically adjusts.
