NOW what?

ALL right folks, who stole my "Comment on this" link from the previous post?

I swear, LJ hates me. No one else has the stupid reply links. Now I can't get comments at all. Grrr.

[Edit: Well, at least THIS one has it. No, I did not disable comments on the previous entry! Not intentionally.]

[Much Later Edit: HAHAHAHAHA, Joe told me how to access that entry for editing. Comments are enabled again! The missing link is back! I have TRIUMPHED! With a little help from my friends. :-)]

Shall we go on a Search and Rescue mission to find the missing link? I'll take the ground patrol, and you provide air cover. When we find it we can return it to LJ Maintenance and demand a more tractable link that won't run away again.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2002-02-14 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
And when we drag it back here in chains, I'll shackle it to the wall! Ha, take THAT! Um, no, wait, I might enjoy that too much. :-D

[identity profile] wcg.livejournal.com 2002-02-14 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Fortunately, I might just be able to offer some ... distraction, should you become overheated with your exhertions. Yeah, that's it. Unit cohesion, team morale, esprit de Corps!

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2002-02-15 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Distraction? You don't mean the sort of distraction that tends to lead to more overheating and overexertion, do you? No, you wouldn't mean that. That would be naughty. ;-)

[identity profile] wcg.livejournal.com 2002-02-15 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well yeah, it could be. But it sure would promote that Esprit de Corps! Nothing quite like a good, hard shared effort to bring a team together.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2002-02-15 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing like a good, hard... Yes. Definitely. :-)

[identity profile] wcg.livejournal.com 2002-02-15 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's so nice to share a common vision at times like this. (He said, with a slow wink.)

If you go back and edit that one, can you see if that got accidentally checked?

LJ isn't outputting "comment on this", so it doesn't appear to be the sort of weirdness that sometimes crops up from malformed HTML.

That was my first thought, but I don't know how to edit it without the "comment on this" link. I can't find the item ID for it. Between this post and two posts ago, where the uncommentable one lies, is a range spanning several hundred potential ID numbers.

Maybe it got checked accidentally. Best I can figure.

[identity profile] joedecker.livejournal.com 2002-02-15 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I had missed that, but I do have something you may not have tried. From your user info (or any page with the blue left column in it), pick "Edit Entries", then choose "last N entries" for some value of N...?

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2002-02-15 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA that did it! "Disallow comments" had, indeed, been checked. And for my future information, that post was itemid 58276 :-)

[identity profile] joedecker.livejournal.com 2002-02-15 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome! I'm just glad we found a workaround, don't matter none to me how it got that way. :)

[identity profile] tytso.livejournal.com 2002-02-14 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, for what it's worth, your latest reply to a comment I made in your journal had a fairly short URL in the e-mail notification to me -- only about 70 characters or so. Is this one to you any better?

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2002-02-15 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
This one was

http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?journal=3Dcjsmith&itemid=3D584=
51

Admittedly, only seventy-two characters before adding the stupid equals sign for line wrapping, but they add five spaces ahead of it and their MIMEification software seems to wrap at seventy-five. And the 3D before cjsmith makes it nonfunctional, of course.

Almost everyone else still gets the short ones. (I've noticed [livejournal.com profile] portia, on my Friends list, seems to be stuck with long ones now too.)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2002-02-15 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
That malformed last sentence was supposed to refer to lj user portia, but I messed up the link.

[identity profile] tytso.livejournal.com 2002-02-15 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
There are a couple of interesting options in the "Edit Personal Information" screen, including one near the end which has as its description. "Send HTML emails. Check this if your e-mail program fully supports HTML in your email. Many clients try to support it but fail horribly. If you uncheck it, LiveJournal will only send text e-mails." Maybe livejournal got confused and accidentally flipped some bits in your personal options section of your account?

There's also an interesting option labelled "Enable message boards. Check this if you want people to be able to reply to journal entries you post." Sounds like this somehow got hiccuped to off when you posted that last transaction, which is maybe why the "reply-to" link disappeared? I dunno..... sounds like there may be some bugs in LJ.
(But I guess you already knew that. <grin>

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2002-02-15 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the reminder! I'd forgotten about those settings. Going off to check them RIGHT NOW...!

Darn, they're looking just like I left them (no HTML, yes comments).

LJ has always sent me MIMEified stuff, but (to their credit) not full HTML. For which I am profoundly grateful.

Yet another great userpic! 8-)

[identity profile] tytso.livejournal.com 2002-02-16 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if someone is developing a new "feature" in LJ for sending MIME messages, and something in your profile is accidentally triggering the feature... it's the only explanation I can think of.... I assume you've tried contacting the LJ support folks?

Yeah, I've decided that aside from the obvious "Teddy Bear" relationship to my name, my personality definitely has some ursine characteristics. So I've been really partial to bear pictures. :-)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2002-02-19 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
You're partially right: they're developing a new "feature". I just happened to be one of the early conversions. All links will look like that in the future. Pthththbtt.

Keep those bear pictures coming. :-)

[identity profile] tytso.livejournal.com 2002-02-20 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
What mail-reader are you using? Maybe it wouldn't be too hard to hack it to do automatic de-MIME-ification?

At the moment, I only have those two bear pictures. But I'm looking for more. :-)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2002-02-21 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe somebody already has, and I just don't know where to find it. Emacs RMAIL.

I was just sure there was a place to poke around at everyone's LJ userpics, so you could plagiarize, but I guess not. I suppose you could see who's interested in bears, find good userpics, and ask the "owners" if you can copy them. :-)
