As expected I walked way too much at the square dance convention. Our room was far from the elevators, so checking out on Monday evening (round trip to room, round trip to car, round trip to Advanced hall for Rob's room key) cost me my last tip with Kikuchi-san (foot budget exhausted). Oh well. I am flared up now, but only on the right foot and not seriously, which means I'm learning. Go me!

I also swam every single day. Now I know why people do it. The hotel pool was comfortable! Seriously - it wasn't excruciating to get into it. It wasn't even BAD to get into it. I was impressed. As for the actual exercise, that was humbling. My record: five laps. (Yes, you can laugh now. I know it's really just relief that you don't have to live in this body.) Fortunately, I feel like I'd get better quickly if I kept it up. And the lovely bonus of swimming was that my feet always felt terrific 'cause I wasn't standing on them.

MRI tomorrow morning and Friday morning, one foot each.

Why aren't they doing both feet on the same day?

And, yes, warm pools are a gift from $diety. You need to hook a solar panel up to the one you have at your house :-)

They claim they can't. I don't know why. The gal booking the appointments apologized for the hassle. Eh, I don't much care -- I can drive to it and my boss knows why I'll be in late those days. I just hope it doesn't cost megabucks due to my icky insurance.

I had my breasts done on different days (a pain, given that it's an hour away, and one of my scans was at 7 am, the other at 9:30 pm). They told me it's that they need to inject contrast fluid mid-scan, then watch its progress through the part they're scanning, and if they do it on the same day, the stuff's still in the body, it's not a "fresh" contrast injection. They can only do one foot at a time, at any rate, so they inject the stuff, do one foot . . . then they can't see the contrast fluid go through the other foot. (I keep wanting to type "boob" for "foot.)

Ahhh, that makes sense! Thank you.

Boot? Foob? Yeah, foob! I like that new word and now want to find a meaning for it.

No, don't be humbled by 5 laps. That's great! Swimming is hard. You should be proud of yourself.
Tuesday, July 5th, 2005 10:07 pm (UTC)
I'm not sure I could do five laps in a hotel pool, never mind a regular lap pool!
Tuesday, July 5th, 2005 10:32 pm (UTC)
This pool was an odd shape but did have a nice long lap lane on one side. I have no idea how it'd compare to a regular lap pool. Maybe I should say I did three. :-)

It is? I should? Wow. I know I looked like a world-class dork -- I was trying not to get water in my ears, so I didn't do the lean and mean crawlstroke, but instead did a version of the breaststroke that involved keeping half my head above water most of the time. But hey, I did it. I exercised. Go me. :-)

5 laps isn't bad. It's about where I started, and I used a kickboard. Someday when I win the lottery/marry a rich man/get money dumped on my lawn I want an indoor lap pool. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm swimming!
Tuesday, July 5th, 2005 11:36 pm (UTC)
I don't use a kickboard, although I suspect my arms would be equally tired either way. Holy moly I have no upper body strength! :-)

An indoor HEATED lap pool.... mmmmmmm, now you're talking.

Dreamland is fun!

A couple of the Y's have indoor heated lap pools. And they are devine! My fav's the one downtown.

I should see whether there's a good one near me and what the membership fees are. (I find it very weird that the web page refuses to tell you. Come in and ask, they say. O-kaaaaaay.)

Ahh. It may behoove you to shop around the different Y's. 'Cause some are more expensive than others, even though you get to use all of them in the valley. I know ours for a family membership costs 74 per month. Its cheaper for a single person. and I also know that the above mentioned downtown Y costs more than mine (south valley)

Good thought! Thanks!

Swimming is always such a treat for me. I'm glad that you managed the convention without a total meltdown of the footsies. Hopefully they'll know more about what they're treating after the MRI. Good luck!!

The only swimming I had done since college was a couple of dunkings in my pool, and Lordy how my views have changed now that I've been in a better one! My goodness, I could imagine enjoying it.

Thanks -- I'm pinning a lot of hope on this (these) MRI(s).

Five laps whoops my ass. ;-) Of course, I can hardly do anything other than the dead man float. :-)
Wednesday, July 6th, 2005 02:51 am (UTC)
And I almost forgot: Good luck on the MRIs if I don't catch anymore LJ updates for a couple more days!
Wednesday, July 6th, 2005 03:31 am (UTC)
Oh, when I started swimming I think I could do about 4 laps (that's back & forth & back & forth, not round-trip laps) without having to stop and pant for breath. It gets better pretty fast.

Hope the MRI goes well!
Wednesday, July 6th, 2005 05:45 pm (UTC)
These were round-trip laps, but I did stop and pant at the end of the lane after numbers 3 and 4. The fun bit was grabbing the handrails at the little ladder to exit -- my arms were gone! :-)

As others have pointed out 5 units (whether it is 5 trips along the pool or 5 trips "there & back") is pretty good starting out. When I tried swimming a couple of years ago, I couldn't even make 1 trip along the pool without stopping (and that's just 1 length, not 1 "there & back").

I decided, though, that swimming just isn't for me -- and luckily I have other options. I recently started riding my bicycle again, and after the first several humbling times of not being able to get very far, I'm getting my leg strength & aerobic ability back, so I'm enjoying it.

I'm really glad that you're learning how to pace yourself. Once you understand that, then you can actually learn to stop before you'll be in too much pain to walk the next day!!!
Wednesday, July 6th, 2005 05:48 pm (UTC)
That was five round-trips. But I did stop and catch my breath in between a few of 'em. Swimming's almost like *work*! Sheesh!

Yeah, swimming isn't really for me either -- too much setup/cleanup time, for one thing -- but now I know it's at least bearable. I'm glad you're enjoying bicycling! There are lots of challenging rides in the area, too, and pretty views from hills.

I am hoping that by the time I know exactly how to pace myself I'll have a diagnosis. Fingers crossed.

I'm glad you found a pool that was comfortable to swim in, and that your MRIs are both being done this week!

Thanks! Maybe a Y near me has a good one. Gotta go look. The backyard does *not* cut it.
