I've spent too much time over the years trying to think of how a lightsaber's blade could actually be stopped at a fixed length. The amount of energy required to hold up a light beam like that would cause a small black hole at the end of the saber, IMHO. ;-)
I loved the pics of "everyday uses" for one, like cutting/toasting a bagel, trimming hedges. I'd think the heating the coffee would have to be very quick to keep it from boiling away.
Don't know if you're familiar with the X-Men comics and/or movies, but I think either in the ubergeeks or the multi_genre_fan community a while back there was a debate about whether or not a lightsaber (which supposedly can cut anything) could cut solid adamantium (which supposedly can't be destroyed). Can you say "time sucking debate"? I knew you could. :-)
