Running: more good news, and some sort-of bad news

I did go! My belly made me pay for it later, but it was worth it this time. I really wanted to see if my feet would be okay for short runs.

I went a mile. I got one twinge from one foot at 1/4 mile or so, but nothing else. I was panting and wheezing by the 3/4 mile point, plus the rain had started to pour down in earnest, so I was glad to be on my way back. I'm glad my feet can go a mile. I'm disappointed, but not too surprised, that my wind is so awful. That can be fixed easily enough if I can keep exercising.

The next important test for my feet is to see whether they can run two days in a row. That's the test that made me STOP running, late last December.

I told my physical therapist yesterday that if I can run, hike, and backpack, that's all I need. I don't have to have medically perfect feet. I'm "cured" if I can do the activities I love.

I may not have to have the nerves killed!

Me too :-)

You might not have to have your nerves killed either? ;-)

Good for you

I'm not sure (not having been with your journal that long) what has caused the problem with your feet, but I'm sure glad that you're making progress!

Thanks!

I'm not positive myself - it started a while back and there was no obvious injury or trauma. Originally the doctor diagnosed it as "capsulitis", inflammation of the tissue surrounding the joints, in the ball of the foot; but later the pain moved around and he said no, it's "neuromas", tumors on the nerves, between the joints on the ball of my foot. They're benign, so if I can stop the pain I don't need any further intervention.

hmpf! I've never heard of such a thing before. Not that I'm a medical expert or anything, I've just worked in a few doctors' offices. Well, I'm glad that they're benign! And, again, I'm glad you're making progress. Surgery would not be a pleasant way to go.

No, not pleasant. There's at least a slightly less invasive alternative: the nerves can be killed with a series of alcohol injections. I bet that doesn't feel too good...
