Rob spent a chunk of the evening going through the steel shelving in the den and listing stuff on Freecycle. I think he's given away about twenty things this evening. Wow!

I've looked at a big pile of crap on top of the tall filing cabinets. Five boxes (big ones), all photos. Mostly it's stuff I've looked at before. That'll save a lot of time. This time I divided it into chunks of a size I might be able to tackle in a weekend or two. The project is just too big to take on all at once, because a) I have a day job, b) we have cats, c) we hire house cleaners. I can't leave stuff lying around all over the place.

I divided it into "1997 and before", "1998 - Jan 2003", and "2003 - 2004". That middle pile was beautifully sorted until I came across a coupla more rolls that go in that time frame. Ah well. A weekend apiece, and I can at least have everything chronological and labeled. Another weekend apiece and they'll all be in albums with the negatives in sleeves. I think I'll start this project on my next free weekend, which is some time in October.

I think I have just enough sleeves and albums and such that I'll run out when I convert to digital.

Freecycle is a set of local mailing lists where people give stuff away for free. No barter, no swap, no selling -- just give stuff away that they no longer want and that someone else can use. It's wonderful. We've gotten rid of a lot of stuff that would otherwise have gone to a landfill (probably via Goodwill, but hey) and people have written us notes saying that the things were useful. :) I've also picked up one or two useful things that way.

And we've given away some pretty major stuff - this latest batch included a Palm VII, an HP Laserjet, a vaccum cleaner, and two nice hands-free headsets. They've just all been sitting in boxes for years, or have otherwise been replaced.
