The surprise party was wonderful. :-)

I got a slow start, because I had no idea it would take nearly half an hour to print out a thirty-page birthday card. But I arrived at Lake Elizabeth in time, just before the 12:30 deadline, pulling up right behind [livejournal.com profile] rampling. We both decided our cars were too conspicuous, so we parked wrong way 'round, since the cars' noses don't have identifying bumper stickers.

I wrestled a lot of schtuff out of the car, assembled the scooter, and rode it towards the path. I was pretty loaded down: I had an underseat basket containing a couple photos and an invoice and the cupholder and my purse, a front basket with a catalog and registration card and video on how to fold the thing, my hiking boots AND the extra battery on my lap, and my backpack between my ankles. Of course at this point my cell phone rang. It was [livejournal.com profile] joedecker; by the time I answered I could see him waving.

We hid the scooter behind a barbecue grill, with a blanket to shield it from the sun so that [livejournal.com profile] mactavish's *ss wouldn't get any hotter. People took noisemakers and acted silly with them. I met a great many folks I had never met before. I wished we'd all had nametags, with our LJ names on them! The only LJ nametag was [livejournal.com profile] dewhitton, represented by a toy stuffed bat. It had to be tied down so as to stay put in the wind. I hope that was fun for the bat.

The party organizers had gotten me a pretty flower - a lily, still in its pot - to thank me for the [livejournal.com profile] scooting idea. It took a bit of a beating in the wind, but it smelled lovely and I was touched.

The person standing next to me (WHO ARE YOU? You were fun to talk to!) spotted Casey and Mary arriving. Good eyes! The timing was perfect: 1PM, as planned. I wandered through the group saying "be ready". Many folks turned their back on the entrance so as not to be recognized too quickly. Mary took off in some random direction. Darn, had she spotted us? But Casey got her to come back.

Mary said later that she truly had no idea what was up until we all started shouting. It was terrific. She kept shaking her head and putting her hand up to her face.

There was a long line of hugs, and then [livejournal.com profile] jdecker led her over to where we'd put the scooter. She'd had an inkling of this, as it turns out, but she had noticed the scooter under its blanket and "thought it was somebody's stroller". :-)

Lots of cameras were around, and even one or two video cameras. I hope some of that stuff gets posted.

Somebody said the magic word "cake". Of course I hadn't remembered that the candles I was bringing had a purpose. I headed over, gave the candles to [livejournal.com profile] amywithani, and got in her way taking a picture. The cake said "Scooting says Happy Birthday Mary!".

It was windy enough that lighting the candles was a real challenge. Who had the great idea of representing Mary's age in binary, using white and blue candles? And then lighting only the ones? Finally, with a large number of people forming a human shield, the candles all stayed lit long enough for the fastest rendition of "Happy Birthday" I've ever heard. Then Mary blew them out. I think she didn't have to work too hard.

There was much fun dogness (I finally met [livejournal.com profile] bestestdog!), lots of talking, some lovely flirting, and a bit of walking around (especially by the folks with dogs). Several people got to try the scooter. "After all," [livejournal.com profile] zyxwvut said, "we bought it." True enough!

People started to trickle away around three, and by five there were maybe a dozen folks left. Most of those adjourned to [livejournal.com profile] mactavish and [livejournal.com profile] deyo's place, where I bet they're still having a wonderful time.

I made the entries in [livejournal.com profile] scooting public so Mary can read them if she wants to. I figure it's fun to share the excitement of all the plotting with the intended recipient.

A good day. Yay. :-)

It was! A calm, drama-free, friendly blast. :-)
Saturday, April 3rd, 2004 06:44 pm (UTC)
Oh those are the best and so rare. I especially like the part about tying the bat down. *snicker*
Saturday, April 3rd, 2004 08:03 pm (UTC)
They are the best, aren't they?

Wonder what [livejournal.com profile] dewhitton thinks of that.
Saturday, April 3rd, 2004 08:43 pm (UTC)
Been there, done that, except the bats were trying to escape not blow away. 8)

Sounds like an Excellent time was had!
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 10:10 pm (UTC)
Indeed it was excellent! I was incredibly pleased. YAY.
Saturday, April 3rd, 2004 06:49 pm (UTC)

I'm so happy it worked out well -- although I really do think of myself as the arrow pointing in some direction, rather than someone who DID a lot. Mary's friends DID it all! 8-)
Saturday, April 3rd, 2004 08:47 pm (UTC)
She'd had an inkling of this, as it turns out
was she surprised, pleased, touched?
Saturday, April 3rd, 2004 09:55 pm (UTC)
Yes. :)
Saturday, April 3rd, 2004 08:50 pm (UTC)
I wish I could have been there.
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 10:14 pm (UTC)
I wish you could have, too - part selfishly: I could've met you if you had been there!
Monday, April 5th, 2004 02:11 pm (UTC)
That would be wonderful.
Saturday, April 3rd, 2004 11:11 pm (UTC)
This was such a great idea, CJ. It's wonderful the way it turned out.
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 10:15 pm (UTC)
Thank you! Mary's friends are to "blame" for how well it actually turned out -- I'm very happy.
Saturday, April 3rd, 2004 11:13 pm (UTC)
Thank you very much for putting this together. You did great.
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 10:16 pm (UTC)
Thanks. (I didn't even DO all that much!) And thank you for organizing the party, you and [livejournal.com profile] cyan_blue.

BTW, the balloon filler thingies went home with [livejournal.com profile] deyo and [livejournal.com profile] mactavish... much shorter drive for you to retrieve them than if they'd gone home with me. ;-)
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 10:21 pm (UTC)
Oh darn it, I forgot those; I'm sorry you guys had to deal with them. They are one-time use only, but I did make sure they are recycleable. I'll make sure they get to the right place.
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 10:32 pm (UTC)
Oh, no worries - people standing around just wanted to make sure the owner got them back. (Didn't know they were one-use-only.)
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 11:16 pm (UTC)
We can get them recycled, and give [livejournal.com profile] deedeebythebay her foam cooler. :)
Monday, April 5th, 2004 02:07 pm (UTC)
Okay, but let me know if it's going to be a pain in the ass and I'll come over and get them.
Saturday, April 3rd, 2004 11:58 pm (UTC)
It was great. :)

The lily came home with us. I've got to get it to you soon. :)
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 10:07 pm (UTC)
Which lily? I went home with one! :-)

As you might have gathered from stuff [livejournal.com profile] scooting said, there was extra cash left over at the end, and that was to go to you for repairs, maintenance, extra accessories, or really just anything you felt like doing with it. Physical checks are still coming in (got one when I got home from the party) so I will mail you the check soon.
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 09:56 am (UTC)
{many, many hugs} Thank you for everything you created here. The scooter itself was only the beginning. :)
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 10:07 pm (UTC)
Yay! 8-)

I think of myself as having "unleashed" rather than "created". ;-)
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 11:50 am (UTC)
I commented to Mary saying that it felt magical. Thank you for organizing such a wonderful, inspiring birthday party.
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 10:33 pm (UTC)
It did feel magical! Thanks for the party itself go to [livejournal.com profile] cyan_blue and [livejournal.com profile] amywithani. They did the entire party - I didn't do a stitch of that. :-)
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 11:03 pm (UTC)
But you did make the scooter possible and that was so important. I will give thanks here also to [livejournal.com profile] cyan_blue and [livejournal.com profile] amywithani for the party itself. :)
Monday, April 5th, 2004 12:04 am (UTC)
Thanks. I mean, you're welcome. Er, something. :-)

I'm incredibly glad that we were able to give her a scooter. I have so wanted her to be able to have a scooter.
Monday, April 5th, 2004 06:30 pm (UTC)
:)
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 12:19 pm (UTC)
I liked re-living the day through your post! I'll be posting my pictures soon... about 60 of them. Whew...

It was real nice getting to meet you; I've heard of you and seen your posts here before, and it was good to have a chance to finally say hi in person. I've added you to my friends list here on LJ.
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 10:44 pm (UTC)
Yay!

Thank you - I'll friend you back, next time I'm 'round my edit-friends page (next day or so). I too have seen your comments on LJ, and I enjoyed meeting you in person.
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 04:29 pm (UTC)
I just got home from a wonderful weekend of my own, and the first thing I did when I fired up the computer was head to [livejournal.com profile] scooting to see how it all turned out. Thanks so much for letting the remote among us enjoy the day vicariously!
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 10:45 pm (UTC)
I'm glad there are lots of pictures coming in and stuff -- the remote people really needed some feedback on how it went.

I just got home from a wonderful weekend of my own, and the first thing I did when I fired up the computer was head to scooting to see how it all turned out.

Hee - seems you were as excited about it as I was!
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 05:18 pm (UTC)
CJ, you're an angel.
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 10:42 pm (UTC)
Not always. ;-)

Mary's friends, though...
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 06:36 pm (UTC)

Who had the great idea of representing Mary's age in binary, using white and blue candles? And then lighting only the ones?

The latter half was me. ;-D

Riding the scooter was fun: the turning radius is impressively tight.

Z

P.S.: I'd known that having so much flat ground between us and the parking lot, [livejournal.com profile] mactavish would see us from a long way off. %-}
Sunday, April 4th, 2004 09:41 pm (UTC)
I saw you, but I thought it was sheer coincidence that Cortney happened to be in the park that day! I didn't recognize the crowd until the "surprise!"
Monday, April 5th, 2004 12:23 pm (UTC)
It was a great party, and it was particularly nice to meet you. I've added you to my friends list. :-)
Monday, April 5th, 2004 01:01 pm (UTC)
It was good to meet you too! I'll friend you back when I go a-editing.
