Impressions:

1) There are free Reese's Peanut Butter Cups in the kitchen! There are also free Starburst Fruit Chews, and someone who doesn't like the lemon ones keeps leaving tidy little piles of lemon ones. Mmmm, lemon. I better start exercising.

2) People all around the office are friendly, which feels wonderful. In addition, those I knew from a previous job are all welcoming me with big smiles and saying they're so happy to have me. I felt rather unregarded at that job -- guess I wasn't entirely right about that!

3) I am in way over my head. :-O I hope that impression changes in a few days. I have an incredible amount to learn.

You know, this doesn't seem like such a bad thing to be wrong about.

P.S.: Breathe. You'll get to feeling comfy afore ya knows it. ;-D

Indeed it doesn't! I was all happy today. :-)

*deep breath* I hope so. Thanks.

Oooh, between [livejournal.com profile] deyo and [livejournal.com profile] joedecker, that candy stash would be gone. ;)

Between me and me it's already dwindling rapidly! :-)

A week from now you'll feel right at home. Happiness and luck in your new job! Hugs!

Thanks, I hope so! :-) [fingers crossed]

Good luck! Sounds like a fun job :)

Are you allowed to tell us about it yet?
Tuesday, March 30th, 2004 01:34 pm (UTC)
It's fun so far, but then I haven't precisely done anything yet. :-)

Yes, I can tell you some. They haven't "announced the company" yet (what this means, when there's a sign out front and a web page, is unclear to me -- obviously people know this place exists). So there's some amount of Be Quiet in the air.

We're a startup company designing an embedded processor. It has cool math and bit-twiddling capabilities, and it's aimed at performance on mid-size data streams, like videoconferencing or a CAT scan. My first assignment is to write some diagnostics, and then I'll probably be sent to write OS-like code.

Mmmm... Peanut Butter Cups.

Glad you're around seemingly friendly cow-orkers. You should be above water soon. I have confidence. :-)

There's free lunch, too, if I want whatever's in the freezer. I could really put on the pounds working at a place like this.

Friendly cow-orkers make everything so. much. better!

Yes, having friendly cow-orkers really improves your moo-d.

Mmm, that thought gives me something to chew on for a while.
Tuesday, March 30th, 2004 04:55 pm (UTC)
Well, I ran into your boss at the gym today during lunch. Now we know why he goes there :-)
Tuesday, March 30th, 2004 06:25 pm (UTC)
I guess so. Those BBQ potato chips seem to jump into his mouth, just like the lemon Starbursts are doing for me. :-)

It sounds wonderful! Best of luck -- you'll do fine once you get your sea legs.
Tuesday, March 30th, 2004 08:23 pm (UTC)
Thanks! I hope so. Already I'm able to do tiny little things.
Tuesday, March 30th, 2004 08:07 pm (UTC)
Free snacks rocks! We have some here (though no PBCs), and I love it. Plus the FREE DIET COKES & JUICES which makes me smile! It still amazes me how little things can make much larger positive impacts on my mood than their size would seem to warrant.

Wishing you the best in digging in! I'm there with you....

I'm actually somewhat glad we don't have any salty snacks that I can stand. The potato chips have BBQ on them, for example. Candy is enough temptation all by itself, I don't need any more!

How long have you been at your new job? I'm going on 36 hours of employment this evening.
Tuesday, March 30th, 2004 08:32 pm (UTC)
I just finally got 'round to writing a little entry (http://www.livejournal.com/users/rampling/123492.html) about it. I've been at the new job for one week plus two days. I'm still at work right now. OK, perhaps I'm not working right now, but I'm physically here.

Hmmmm, maybe I'll go get a FREE DIET COKE now... then BAKTA WORK!
