Sometimes, I have something I don't want to throw away, but I really can't sell either. Twelve bags of tea, for example. Sometimes I just want someone to take it off my hands.
I ground my way through the 88 communities with "free stuff" in their interests (thanks to
firecat for finding them). I found quite a few communities interested in swapping stuff, which is close to what I was looking for.
Here's a rundown, for anyone else who might be interested. I didn't check out location-specific communities nor icon communities, of which there are a few.
[Bad username or site: a perfect trade @ livejournal.com], Trade With Us: Swap stuff, says the info. Last entry: today. Half or more of the entries are things for sale.
artrade, trade art suckers: Trade your artwork. Last entry: five months ago.
bargainlover and
bargains are quite active and include mainly links to eBay.
claimxme, Claim My Unwanted Stuff: Trade your old stuff! Don't ask for money, this is a trading community, says the userinfo. Last entry: a month ago. Many of the recent entries ask for money.
freestuff, Free Stuff: Last entry: 04 Jan 2003. People find out about offers of free stuff, usually promotional deals from companies, and post them here.
give_it_away, junk conservationist: For people who do a lot of spring cleaning and have things Goodwill doesn't want, says the userinfo. Last entry: today. Everything here is for sale; a bit less than half are on auction sites.
giveaways, giveaway: Last and only entry: two months ago, talking about a good thrift shop.
giveitawaybob, Give It Away, Bob!: Don't want to throw something away? Try getting rid of it here! Don't advertise your online auctions here, says the userinfo. Last entry: today. (This very same entry is the most recent entry in LOTS of communities so far.) A bunch of stuff is for sale, but some people appear to be looking to trade, too.
indietrade, !!: For people who like indie rock and want to trade. Last entry: five days ago. Recently started. Most stuff is for sale.
slash_this, trading: if you get something you don't want, need, or use. someone else could prolly use it, says the userinfo. Last entry: a month ago. Last on-topic entry: six months ago. Of the on-topic entries, though, LOTS of people are actually interested in TRADING.
swapper, Swapper: the place where LJ users come together to swap new and used things, says the userinfo. Last entry: a week and a half ago. Again, lots of people do seem to be interested in trading.
thriftbitch, Cheap Clothing Junkies: sell, trade, says the userinfo. Last entry: yesterday. Everything here is for sale.
tradeamix, The Mix Project: Trade music here.
tradingpost, trading post: Your "trash" might be someone else's treasure. This is not about auctions, says the userinfo. Last entry: three and a half months ago. Two entries before that: one year ago. Some of this is definitely trades, although some are sales, too.
xthriftwhoresx, xThrift- Store- Whorex: Buying, trading, and selling, says the userinfo. Last entry: yesterday. Some people sell, some seem to want to trade.
Summary: If
a_perfect_trade,
claimxme,
giveitawaybob,
slash_this,
swapper,
tradingpost, and
xthriftwhoresx all merged, then added even more members, and took the most restrictive superset of everyone's rules, they'd be exactly what I was looking for. I may join one or more for a while.
A lot of these may be what other people are looking for. All of 'em could use members. Go see.
