Went to the Sunnyvale "art and wine festival" (read: chaotic field of baby strollers) and came home with a wood flute. Pretty pretty pretty. I like its sound. I like its appearance, with dark brown toasted-wood etchings ornamenting blond maple. The one thing I don't like is the lack of a low G# or A; it can do an entire chromatic octave above those, but it has the low G, and the gap seems a little awkward. I'm having great fun with it. I can do several simple tunes and am learning to improvise a bit. Its easiest set of fingerings make a pentatonic scale, which is great for pretending that I'm at a pow-wow or that I'm just about to hear the accompanying Japanese drum join in.

Rob is already tired of hearing it. This tells you how eagerly I enjoyed playing it this afternoon. :-)

Cool, good for you.

How is Rob, by the way? What's he up to these days?

Rob is a flight instructor now, and he's thoroughly enjoying his new profession. He's abandoned computer stuff completely. He works out of a small flying club at Palo Alto airport, teaching in Warriors and Cessna 172s and occasional weird oddball stuff a student comes up with. His first student is on landings now, which Rob says keeps him on his toes. :-)

This reminds me I haven't asked you lately how Rondo and the kiddos are doing! How is everyone? (And is Widad's face healing up, too?)

Hey, cool! Tell him "mabruk" for me, would you?

Rondo & the kids are doing fine. Rondo's done with school for the year, and the kids have tests next week and then they're done too. Rondo's got a pile of research he's itching to get at, so he's loving the time off from teaching -- he hasn't had a teaching-free summer for years. Everyone's ready for a change of pace (me too).

Widad doesn't look bruised at all any more, and she's got a nice new set of teeth. :) She says she liked the teeth from her God better, and I can hardly blame her, but at least she's not self-conscious when she smiles or talks any more. She's mad at me today because I went out to dinner last night, so I didn't eat the fabulous stuff she cooked, AND I didn't call her to babysit -- and then, I had to go to work before we could have coffee together. Well, next time she comes, I'll make sure we have coffee -- it's one of the favorite parts of my day!

Shokran!

Wow, Rondo hasn't had summers off? Yikes, summers off seem to be the best thing about an academic schedule. I'm glad he's getting the full strength of that benefit now!

I'm glad! I don't blame her for being wistful about the originals either, but I'm glad she's smiling and talking and eating and looking fine and that she's all energetic enough to gripe at you for not eating her food. :-)
