The short answer is it's Netscape 4.7's bug and they don't choose to work around it.

Funny that this only started last Wednesday and they now claim there's "nothing they can do" to change it. But that's ultimately their choice to make, so I won't quibble. I liked the suggestion of turning off JavaScript; I'll try that.

They could change it by cripling the use of CSS, but IMO, CSS makes things so much better in this environment in terms of simplifying the template base, that not using them would overcomplicate things and potentialy make other browsers/OS/desktop combinations have problems.

But all this was hunky-dory until last Wednesday? That doesn't hang together for me.

It was? That's... odd. I know that NS4.7 has CSS issues, but they shouldn't cause that.

Have you tried clearing your cache?

Maybe there was some change in the LJ code. Either way, I'm sure it's time to upgrade my browser soon...

IE five or NS six?

I've got IE five, but am more used to NS, so I'll go fetch NS six and see whether it fits me comfortably. :-)

Note that in NS4.7, "turning off javascript" *also* turns off CSS as a side effect; so the fix isn't actually about javascript, it's about "use this mislabeled switch to turn off the thing that never worked right anyway." It makes sense -- it's a lot saner to just get people to turn off the NS-CSS directly than to browser-type-sniff and feed it custom pseudo-CSS... CSS was a really cool idea, but NS4 dead-ended before that much of it was actually implemented. _Mark_

Yes, they explained all that with the recommendation. I really should upgrade... sigh... one more for the Round Tuit list.

I go lie down now.
