Kim just brought me outside to see a dead rat.
Specifically, the underside of the not-so-newly deceased rat. I'm not usually a big fan of maggot piles, but what got me about this one was the color and thickness of the slime coating the grass underneath. And the smell, yeah, that wasn't so great either.
We decided that section of lawn didn't need mowing right now.

I think for your rat, I'd prefer a shovel. Currently the ones I have to deal with are living, scurrying and chewing on things in my garage; and of course, avoiding being trapped. My cat, Natasha, finds them most entertaining when she sees, hears, or smells them.
