Today I was smiling in anticipation of Half Price Candy Day on Monday, when I realized I hadn't made much of a dent in the chocolates I bought LAST Half Price Candy Day (mid-February). Don't get me wrong; I still love chocolate. I just no longer particularly enjoy mediocre chocolate, and I'm not willing to vacuum up a box merely because it was cheap. It seems that the "chocolate addiction" is now more aptly named than the thinly-disguised sugar addiction it used to be.

I wonder what it would be like if my other vices were scaled back so thoroughly! Would I be a boring sermonizer? :-) (Wait: that's definitely a vice.) Or just a snob? (Ditto.)

I found a box of Baci (Italian chocolate hazelnut bon bons) on sale dirt cheap the last time that I was at Ross. Would have been about 2 or 3 weeks ago. Blue, heart-shaped box, obviously leftover from the February candy holiday. But Baci are FABULOUS! Best $8 spent in a long time.

Ooooooooooo. Baci are REALLY TASTY.

I loves them, yes I do. But they're normally bloody expensive so I don't indulge often.

No kidding. But finding THOSE on Half Price Candy Day would be a great coup!

Yeah, half price candy day became completely uninteresting when I realized it's not that I don't like chocolate, it's that I don't like cheap chocolate, which tastes like candy, instead of chocolate.

The only half price candy day I'm really excited about any more is after Halloween, mostly bc when I do have the urge for candy from my childhood, I want the bite-size ones, not full bars.

It still might be worth going to Godiva though. I wish Maison du Chocolat did half price candy day. Unfortunately, I had a bar of chocolate recently that ruined me for all other chocolate: I eat a quarter-sized piece and it's enough chocolate for a day or two, bc the flavor is so intense.

I have plebian tastes :-). I still love cheap candy (and actually, I do think I like sugar more than chocolate anyhow).

I think I used to be exactly in agreement with you on this: milk vs dark or expensive vs cheap were fine with me as long as it was sweet enough, because sweet was the part of it that I craved. Now I'm less drawn to sweet and more drawn to those 85% bars.

(Thinking of this, it's odd that white "chocolate" never did anything for me. That's inconsistent, I know. It's sweet. I just never really loved its flavor/texture.)

Wow, that bar of chocolate sounds amazing. Now that I think of it, I might be getting something of a similar effect. For nearly a year I couldn't eat chocolate with much sweetness in it, so I got really used to the intense dark-dark-dark stuff. Now when I eat a Mr. Goodbar or something out of a Whitman's sampler, it's kind of like eating those little wax bottle candies.

Oddly enough, since I responded to your post, the Easter Bunny brought me a basket and while I very much appreciated the thought (this is my lifetime second easter basket), I'm also horrified at how much bad candy I have sitting on my coffee table.

Coworkers are GREAT that way.

I totally hear you on it. And they rarely make Easter candy in 85% Extra Dark, anyway. But we got fine chocolates yesterday.

Yay for scrumptious chocolate!

My ideal Half Price Candy Day: some Godiva dark, some Neuhaus, a box of Baci, and a box of the kind of Ferrero Rocher that come in the brown foil. Oh, and a couple pieces of candied ginger dipped in something rich and luscious (I think Godiva still does this). I would give myself a seizure from overwhelming sensory joy.

I think part of it is that the better chocolate is high percentage bitter, and I'm *really* sensitive to bitter. I hate it. No dark chocolate for me. Also no coffee, bleah.

Ooh, that would be a nice mix!

I am mostly very sensitive to bitter too. I refuse to put broccoli in my mouth, and I'll never enjoy coffee. Heck, some artificial sweeteners are bitter to me. I don't know why the dark chocolate is so tasty to me.

Wait -- half price CANDY day?

I was waiting for half-price cute-stuffed-bunny day!

Actually, I hope it lasts for a week or so -- I have not gone out looking for nice ones to buy yet.
