On the positive side, I got to see some of the most adorable puppies ever.*

Mama didn't want to let them leave her side. (Sadly, they had to, or the doctor couldn't have done anything for them.) To distract them while they were wriggling and being held and shrieking, I'd give them a pinky finger, and boy could they latch. La Leche League has nothing on these little guys.

I could hold two of these tiny puppies in one hand. Their eyes weren't open yet, and Mama was very protective.

* This has nothing to do with the fact they are less than two weeks old and smaller than the palm of my hand. Nothing at all. Nope nope nope.

I feel the same way about baby tortoises.

Oooooooooh.

Re-check after tail docking. Mama had been grooming the sutures right off them.

[edit: Based on bits of conversation I heard, I'm not sure our clinic did the tail docking. This may have been a case of "hey, you guys are open on Saturday and I need these puppies looked at." That happens a lot for us, as most non-emergency clinics in the area aren't open on Saturday.]

Their shells are still soft, right? I know squat about tortoises.

We had to give them tiny little bandage-tape wristbands with numbers on them. I wanted to stand there and hold them all afternoon.

Depends upon the species. Baby desert tortoises' shells are intially pretty flexible, and harden as the tortoise ages.

But they're all itty-bitty, with cute little bright eyes, and eensy-weensy sharp (never used!) little claws, and they take such delicate yet robust bites out of food.

They're adorable to me, anyway.

They show up with eyes open, right? There's something very cute about a creature that can look back at you. That's the one thing about the wee-most kittens and puppies that isn't (for me) the perfect combination of cute: they can't look around yet.

Aww :)

Those guys could make any day brighter. :)

*wince* If I'm seeing right, I could see the blood on one of the puppies' tails. I'll refrain from commenting on tail docking itself because I know people will bite me if I say something about it.

You're right, you can, and I winced too -- a lot. Poor little guys.
