Job market

I got a cold call from a recruiter. That hasn't happened since 2001.

Software folks (or those who can fake it) out there looking for work: cell phones are heating up. If you want me to pass along your name, holler.

How about UI research & some basic coding/web design skills? :)

That's you, yes? I dunno what's out there, but I can pass your name to a recruiter if you'd like!

Yes, that's me. Yay!

Yep. Akien has been getting a steady stream of calls and e-mails. It's a nice change of pace from the past few years. Of course, they all want him to work longer hours for less money, somewhere he'd have to commute twice as long to, but hey, maybe we'll strike gold one of these days!

Wow, that's great! ...well, except for the longer hours for less money with a longer commute. That's not so good. No wonder everyone's looking for people: if you're not willing to pay them, you wind up shortstaffed.

Yeah. One of the issues that we have at this point is that Akien is essentially at the peak of his earning power without going back to management. And we (the whole family) didn't like it much when he was a manager before. So unless he finds something that is EXACTLY perfect, and located, say 15 minutes from here... it's just not going to beat out the stable, larger company that we actually PAID for him to work at (he did contract-to-hire for more than 7 months and then it was another 3 months till we had full benefits, nearly twice total what we'd planned for when they told us "6 months").

So mostly we don't really talk to them beyond what's necessary to determine that they want his 18 years of experience on Silk-test at a 3-years=of-experience rate.

What a shame that *I* don't do QA (and yes, I've thought about it!)....

Yeah, tech is definitely strong. There was an interesting Boston Globe article a couple days ago about how tough it's been for local tech firms to find people, with the big out-of-town competition opening local offices. It sounded awfully familiar, since my two prime opportunities were a local company and Google, and I went local in part because I felt I'd make more of an impact there.
