I had dinner with my sister-in-law last night. Glad I am that she reminded me, too, because with the kind of day it was, I missed her first call [doctor appointment] AND her e-mail [busy, hadn't looked at personal mail] AND I hadn't looked at my calendar for the evening yet by the time she called again.

She pulled out a sock for me to try on! It was the cutest little ankle-sock in varied colors, and if I were a knitter I'm sure I could identify more about it. It's all cotton, so it will be a cotton blend, and washable. SOCK!! She says she'll adjust the length and then send me the pair when both are ready. My completely clueless eye thinks she was knitting from the cuff down to the toe rather than the other way round, and I hope that's right, because that's got to make it easier to adjust the length.

What do people do when their socks fit? They must have hours extra each day when they're not always reaching down to pull their socks up. I bet it's like giving up television.

Eeeee cute socks that will fit me! I think I'm having a good week.

[edit: The second photo here is of my socks!]

People pull their socks up? I just wear default white tube socks, let 'em bunch around the ankles, and get along with my day.

I don't think I even can pull them up if I wanted to, my manly calf-muscles are beyond the circumference of puny human socks.

My socks don't go anywhere near my calves. I pull them up when I'm walking on the wrinkles. That's just annoying.

Yay, socks!!

You can knit in either direction, by the way. Some people cast on provisionally, and then work from the middle up to the cuff and from the middle out to the toe.

I was guessing based on a string sticking out from the toe.

I felt really bad when the sock didn't fit, because while my feet are very short (I'm something like a size 5 1/2) they're also very very WIDE (I'm something like an EE or EEEE), and that takes up a lot of the stretchiness of the knit.

You are correct--I did knit this pair top down. They're finished, photographed, and blogged about. I just need to make a couple of notes for future duplication and then they'll be on their way to you.

And don't feel bad about the not fitting. Even after more than a dozen pairs for myself I still end up ripping out and reknitting significant portions of my own socks. When I map the pattern in my head that fits me onto someone else's feet, the results are bound to be unpredictable. I just hope that rev2 fits better.

Thank you so much. These are going to be way cool.

I have a sneaky idea that I am going to start buying you sock yarn when I see a color I like. Heh heh heh. David will kill us both.
