Highlights from the trip: July 5

Bryce Canyon has a hoodoo shaped like a poodle. Poodle hoodoo. Poodlehoodoo, poodlehoodoo, poodlehoodoo...

Thunderstorm, shmunderstorm. If it's gone by the time you arrive, then you made the right decision on departure, right?

It's awkward to party with 20 people you don't know, but if they're nice people, that helps a lot. So does a huge amount of Domaine Chandon rose' champagne.

Saw my first room-size studio-apartment-size hot tub with waterfall. Wow. It's hard to remember a whole bunch of names when suddenly everyone is in a bathing suit and you don't have hairstyles or clothing to go by any more, but hey, you can just talk about how stunning the room is.

Poodoo. ;-)

I remember something like that when I was training for my Death Valley century bike ride. I'd only seen my fellow riders all summer in biking gear, and just before heading west for the event, we had a nice dinner party and I didn't recognize anyone without a second look. :-)

Would "that poodoo that you do so well" make a good potty training song?

It's impressive how much context matters for recognizing people. Before we adjourned to the spa, I would probably not have been able to describe very many people's outfits all that accurately. But take them away, and suddenly I haven't learned any names the whole evening!

That or "My Girl Wants to Potty All the Time". ;-)

Despite the success of my memory most of the time, I'm horrible with names on first meeting, especially if I'm meeting several people for the first time.

Yeah, I did pretty poorly with names overall at this event. I tried! I did! Sometimes trying so darn hard to remember names means that I don't learn anything ELSE about the person, though, which I think is the wrong tradeoff...
