It's almost not worth updating LJ any more. I want to title my entry, and I know I can't, so I don't bother posting at all.

Fifty-six sequences written as of last night. I want 128; going by previous stats I'll be okay with between ninety and a hundred. If I write ten today, ten tomorrow, and ten each day next weekend, I'll make it. If I can do one each work day as well, I'll even have some safety margin. I almost want one of those little progress bars that slow my entire friends view to a crawl every November.

All of this planning presumes I don't get sent somewhere for work in the next week, a very real possibility. I may soon have to face the fact that I cannot both have a startup job and be a C4 square dance caller.

Tasty breakfast this morning. Yesterday I took a break from writing choreo to go to the bank and the store. Got a baguette -- well, what Californians who've never lived in France seem to think is a French baguette (it's sourdough) -- and some cheese. Yesterday's lunch was fondue. This morning I'm eating the last of the "baguette" with butter.

Back to work. This choreo won't write itself.

I use one of the "no longer supported" styles. I also (mostly) use Semagic for posting. (Not in the Blackberry, though.)
Have you tried downloading Semagic? It really does make posting pretty easy and it doesn't seem to give me the problems that you're having.

Haven't tried it. I never saw the need to download a separate piece of software to use a web site. This may drive me to it, though.

Ever tried Dystopia? It's not quite as bare-bones as Lynx, but it avoids the uglier features of the more recent styles. And entry titles work.

That would probably be my second choice. It's a whole lot better than Horizon, that's for sure!

CJ, when you're standing up there giving those calls, and watching the dancers gracefully weave the intricate patterns you wrote, you'll know it was worth the effort!

Give it a try. It gives you the option of HTML or WYSIWYG when you make an entry. It's pretty unobtrusive. I think you'll like it.
Sunday, February 18th, 2007 05:45 pm (UTC)
Doesn't it pop up and annoy you when things happen on the web site? I heard that was one of its major "features". That right there would mean I can't possibly use it most of the time.

"Worth the effort" is a question I try not to examine too closely. :-)

psst: if I need a separate piece of software to use LJ, what's the point of making LJ a web site? Maybe that's where I'm going wrong: I think of it as a web site, when perhaps it was never meant to be usable that way. Obviously people have been depending on supplemental software to use LJ for years.

why can't you title the entry? (or have you already answered that question?)
Sunday, February 18th, 2007 05:57 pm (UTC)
I'm with you on the website thing. I mean, clients might have advantages, but they shouldn't be *necessary*.
Sunday, February 18th, 2007 05:58 pm (UTC)
Nope. It used to have the icon in the tool bar flash, but it doesn't do that anymore--I actually kind of miss that feature. It was subtle but just noticeable enough to catch your attention if you wanted it to.
Sunday, February 18th, 2007 05:59 pm (UTC)
I think Dystopia is what I use--it's a very old style and hasn't been supported for years. I like it.
Sunday, February 18th, 2007 06:09 pm (UTC)
Because LJ is broken in the scheme I use. I described it a little here.

I use the Lynx style too. If I want a title now I make one using the bold tag. I've also found that if I use http://www.livejournal.com/portal I'm able to create a title. It just doesn't work with the /update page any more.
Sunday, February 18th, 2007 07:04 pm (UTC)
Ooo! So I could create the post using portal, then edit it to include things like mood, friends list filtering, and chosen userpic. That's not TOO awful... okay, it's awful, but at least there's a way.

I wouldn't be surprised if within a week there's a Greasemonkey script to fix /update. I'm not a web hacker, but it can't be that hard a problem.

For a few sentences there I thought you were talking about DNA sequencing... :)
Sunday, February 18th, 2007 07:19 pm (UTC)
I'm writing new DNA sequences! Creatures come to life in my laboratory! Mua-ha-ha-haaaa!

Actually it still does all of the above ... but only if you want it to. It's highly configurable. I use the popup that tells you a friend has posted something, but I have it set up for only a few particular people, not my whole friends list. (I started with just my daughter's journal (http://woofiegrrl.livejournal.com/), then later I decided to add someone else (CJ, actually!), and have since added a few more whose posts I want to follow even if I don't actively read my friends list.) You can have a popup and/or a flashing icon in the toolbar and/or a sound for notification, or no notification, which is the default.

Go into the Options window (under the View menu) and click the Friends tab. Under Notification method there are checkboxes to click, including one for "Flash tray icon". Yours must have reset during an update at some point.

CJ, I don't think of it as using a separate program in order to use a website. I think of it the same way as I view the Firefox add-ons that extend the functionality of Firefox. Semagic is just an add-on that extends the functionality of LJ.

I do know what you mean, though. A lot of people have downloaded Picasa in order to use Google's photo site. I use my photo site without any additional program, and having to download a whole 'nother program to use a website annoys me too! But an awful lot of people have done it without blinking an eyelash, and if I didn't already have a photo site I'm happy with, I would have done it too. I would have grumbled a bit at having to use the extra program ... but once it's was downloaded and installed it would just become a normal interface to the website.

I had no idea--I'll play with it at the office tomorrow.
Monday, February 19th, 2007 05:02 am (UTC)
Oh, I wanted to say this before I forgot. If you have your junior high graduating yearbook...I'm in it. I know this because I own one ;-)
Monday, February 19th, 2007 04:18 pm (UTC)
Are you serious? You went to Kennedy? :) :) I don't think I have that yearbook though. Now I wish I did!
Monday, February 19th, 2007 06:14 pm (UTC)
Yup, I did. It was Deb who said you'd gone there so I looked it up. I have your 8th grade pic *evil grin*
Monday, February 19th, 2007 07:50 pm (UTC)
Oh my God that must be AWFUL! I guess nobody likes their eighth grade pics, but man, that's AWFUL. :)
Monday, February 19th, 2007 09:41 pm (UTC)
Heh, yes.

* Note - I did not post either of our photos
Tuesday, February 20th, 2007 03:03 am (UTC)
You've got a scanner, right? :)
Tuesday, February 20th, 2007 03:10 am (UTC)
Semagic is completely out of my brain unless I want it up.
Tuesday, February 20th, 2007 04:33 am (UTC)
Why yes, yes I do.....hee hee hee.
