Can I be a "y"uppie at age 39?

I just got mail: "Your Sterling Vineyards Club merchandise has shipped."

Yes indeedy, last time I was in Napa Valley (a coupla weeks ago) I joined a wine club. I had always been certain that wine clubs were for other people. You know the type: the people who get "box seats" or tile their entryways in marble or can find decent-looking clothing that fits. THOSE people. Suddenly, now I are one. This is very weird.

(The fact that joining gave me 20% off on the case I bought that day had nothing to do with my decision. Really! The deciding factor was that I can't buy that one specific wine anywhere but the winery... UNLESS I join their club. If I'm a member I can have 'em ship it to me.)

Of course I promptly forgot all about it. Now I'm reminded that the primary symptom of being a wine club member is that wine starts showing up at your house on a regular basis.

Now I want clothing that fits.

This cracked me up! I completely get your mind-set, I believe.

Enjoy your wine!

Thanks! Turns out I have to go fetch it from FedEx, because they won't leave wine on the doorstep without a signature IN PERSON. Wonder if I can get the vineyard to ship to my work.

*raises glass of notwine, pinky thrust out*

well, i say m'lady, i do believe you have become one of "them". please remember, we do not ask, we demand.

*cracks up*

but seriously, as much as you enjoy wine, it makes sense. if i had people nearby *cough*erica*cough* to help me consume it, i'd consider it, too. i think i'll stick with my pick-the-pretty-labels thing for now.

of course, you realize that now you're obligated to tell us ALL about the wines you get. :)

Since joining a wine club is after all merely a thinly veiled attempt to come up with more things to write about! (or more nanowrimo character material?) :-)

I read that as "nanowino"!

Fifty thousand sips in a month?

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE that cartoon.

I have indeed been pretty silly during previous Novembers, but I think I'll shy away from writing a "novel" where the main characters are all bottles of wine!

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)

Yeah. Mostly I'm drinking by myself, and thank goodness for those little vacuum things you can put in to save the bottle for later.

Fortunately for me, this vineyard has an every-two-month option, and I wind up needing guest gifts at least that often. Plus I drink some myself. So my total wine purchases won't go up at all.

[identity profile] just-cyd.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
every two months sounds much less overwhelming than monthly. and if you give gifts of wine, you've got that shopping checked off your list! yay for making things easier!

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, definitely less overwhelming. I don't usually give gifts of wine as presents (at least not wine I haven't tried) but every so often I go to a party and need to snag something on the way out the door... *poof*, wine! Every party needs more wine, right? :-)

(Not that I'll bring Sterling wine to everything. Occasionally, though, it'll be the next bottle handy.)

[identity profile] billeyler.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
If there's no bottle that costs over $2.99, we'll join too!

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, the Two Buck Chuck Wine Club! :-)

[identity profile] plymouth.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I just thought wine clubs were for people who like more types of wine than I do... if there were a club that was only dessert wines and white wines I would be there in a flash! It's rather inconvenient not liking reds much. I wonder if I could manage to develop a taste. Afterall, just two years ago I didn't even like Chardonnay...

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know what you mean. I do like reds in general, but I still don't like every bottle of wine I taste. I'm sure there will be bottles arriving that I don't particularly love.

St. Supery has a whites-only option. Maybe other places do too. It's an expense, though...

(and yeah, my taste for reds "arrived" a bit later than my taste for whites.)

Demanding, aren't we? That's the sign of yuppie-dom. ;-)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I was talking to our VP of sales yesterday and he mentioned that he's just an inch taller than "the average man" and can buy clothing anywhere without worry. Dear Lord, what that must be like! I have ONE kind of jeans I can buy (they don't fit AT ALL well, but I can wear them), and ONE kind of bra (also doesn't fit at all well, but stays on, and it's discontinued), and let's not even talk about shoes.

*waits hopefully*

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughter*

I think there might be someone arriving at your house in a month or so...

[identity profile] hitchhiker.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
see? these things really work :)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-10-18 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Maybe I should join one, too!
