Company Z

I have an interview! The first one of the 2006 Job Hunting Season. I shall name it Company Z, and I've already been warned they move like greased lightning if they want someone. This means that if I do get an offer I'll have to accept or deny with no other offers, or even interviews, in hand.

So. Bone up for this one, or push to get another quickly? Probably bone up. This company is a good fit for me or it isn't; another interview won't change that.

Right. :) Nifty.

And make sure you're interviewing them, too. You can wait for the right fit.

It feels so good to be moving on this.

Agreed completely about the interview going both ways. One thing I have to my advantage, through luck more than anything else, is that I was a consultant for over a decade. I interviewed a lot. I've gotten... at least somewhat better at it, and I'll keep my head enough to ask good questions and to listen underneath for the pulse of the place.

Definitely go interview for this one. The only reason in my mind to have another possibility in your pocket is if you're trying to negotiate money or days off or other perks -- it shouldn't really be used to decide if the company is acceptable.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
My only fear is that I'd settle for "barely acceptable" instead of finding "good". With any luck, though, this will be a clear no or a clear yes.

[personal profile] apparentparadox 2006-06-02 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, but it should be easy to avoid settling for "barely acceptable" because you haven't even talked with many companies yet -- so "barely acceptable" shouldn't even be tempting!

Good luck!

I'd hope I have good sense, but my confidence isn't high. :-) Thanks!

I'm in your "thinking good thoughts" corner.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you; I really appreciate it.

[identity profile] hitchhiker.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
ooh - good luck!!

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

What I'd particularly like is to find YOU a job. Here, if not in LA. :)

[identity profile] hitchhiker.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
me too!! btw, would you recommend quicken as a personal finance and budgeting program?

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I use it for finance tracking and (less) investment tracking. I confess I don't have a budget per se. I like it a lot better than my Excel spreadsheet, which was getting quite unwieldy! I don't know its competition, so I can't say I'd recommend it over something else. But it sure does what I need and more. (Pie charts! Cute little graphs! Sorted lists of expenditures by category, by payee, or by date!)

[identity profile] sharya.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! Good luck with the interview!

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Fingers crossed.

[identity profile] callyperry.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Woot! You go! I would expect anybody who talked to you to want to hire you.

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
*blush* thanks! I hope so!

[identity profile] datagoddess.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
Whoo-hoo!! Good luck!

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Hey, how's your situation job-wise? Haven't heard any news on that front for a little while.

[identity profile] datagoddess.livejournal.com 2006-06-03 03:49 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] quasigeostrophy.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! I didn't see LJ last night so had no idea while we were chatting.

"It's the boogie-woogie programmer from Company Z!" ;-)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Bwaha! Two years ago I think I named 'em A, B, and C. Or maybe I had an S and a P in there. Either way, it works :-) :-)

[identity profile] wooddragon.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, already! And I haven't even figured out what I want to be when I grow up. Congratulations!

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I haven't figured out what I want to be when I grow up either. Maybe I'll do that when I retire. :-)

[identity profile] wooddragon.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, never grow up!

(I knew what you meant.)

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2006-06-03 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. :-) I'll grow up in the sense of figuring out who I really am and what I'm good at and all that stuff, when I "retire". (Here I'm defining "retirement" as "no longer caring so much about that high tech salary".) I'll take the WEIRDEST jobs, purely for fun and learning. I'm looking forward to it. It'll be great. I will also have a dog.

[identity profile] wooddragon.livejournal.com 2006-06-03 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, a dog! Me, too!

[identity profile] kennita.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You go, girl! :-D
