Snippets from a square dance calling weekend

Flying there took only one and a half hours. Ah, bliss!

We got a non-smoking rental car with cigarette burns in the upholstery.

Oxnard smells bad, really bad, when the wind is wrong. Like rotting fish.

I was an angel! Once. For a person I had no idea I had ever affected. She came up to me and told me how at a previous year's convention she had been feeling pretty low, and she had been sitting in the breakfast area by herself, and I had asked her if the other seat was taken, and she'd said "no" expecting me to carry it off, and instead I'd sat with her. Apparently that cheered her right up. I, of course, had no idea until she told me all this this weekend. It's the little things we do...

Good hello tip. "Did you just do that?" Well, yes, yes I did.

I'm getting better with music. In, what was it, 3a? 3b? I had three excellent music selections in a row -- good energy, interesting without being intrusive, peppy, music I use well. The dancers were moving along at a good clip having a great time; I was singing along a bit during the resolves; the newer callers were asking me what the music was called and could they have a copy. And then I had to go and put on "It's the Beat Stupid". Brought the whole mood down to about "medium" from there. Dang. Won't make that mistake again.

I can't even remember calling C4 right now. I know I must have.

Southbound 101 from Oxnard is ALWAYS bad. ALWAYS.

Reminder to self: ALWAYS double check the session start time. ALWAYS.

My pie vanished awfully quickly at the afterparty. :-)

At the "goodbye dance" all the staff callers share one stage for a fifteen minute segment. We started introducing each other as very well-known callers who weren't in fact there. Linda Kendall got to be Lee Kopman, which left her chuckling into the microphone for a moment before she could call again. I was Anne Uebelacker, I think Rob was Mike Jacobs, and I can't remember who Ross and Vic were. Oh darn! I should have made the shortest white guy Sandie Bryant. ;-)

I love being on staff at a convention. Heck, I love calling square dance weekends of any sort. If I could call a convention every month or more, I'd quit my day job in a heartbeat. (Well, okay, I'd also have to win the lottery.) Seriously, I love it.

I love your story of being an angel. :) I've had those moments - in both directions - & it makes it very motivating to be nice to people.

It sure does. O'course, sometimes I don't even know what things would be nice to do, and that can make it tough. Is sitting with someone nice? Is letting them have some solitude nice? Apparently, that time I chose "right"!

There's definitely that.

sounds like you had a lovely weekend. how are the footsies doing?

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, I did! It was wonderful. The footsies got very tired, even though I wasn't dancing -- but they were just TIRED tired, not flaring up in agony. Standing is tiring and makes them ache; dancing, walking, hiking, running etc make them flare up. I'm glad I can do a weekend like this (on my feet a major portion of each day) and not have them go into May I Please Remove My Toes With A Spork Now mode.

I am amazed at your statement ... as if Oxnard has ever smelled GOOD. Not!

Glad to hear the rest of the convention went well, though!

And WHAT WAS THAT PEPPY HIGH ENERGY MUSIC YOU WERE USING?

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You're so right! But some times it's more bearable than others, n'est-ce pas? This weekend, particularly the latter part of the weekend, was not one of those times.

I gotta get home to give you music info. Laptop's there.

1. Funky Town, Chaparral 126A
2. When It's Gone, Solid Gold 706CD
3. Goin Fi Gone, got from Michael Kellogg who can't remember where he got it

Great to hear that your trip went well and you had fun. And the pie was a success!

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay PIE! I'm glad to hear you're having such a good time in India (now that you're not sick any more, I hope?) :-)

[identity profile] rampling.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I recovered from the bad-gut-sick stuff that I had before we left for our Goa/Bombay trip. But I've had minor-gut-irritation which has lasted -- until yesterday! Yesterday afternoon sometime, I noticed I felt stronger and my gut wasn't irritated. And for the first time last night I didn't wake up once to use the restroom! Though I may just now have a tiny bit of irritation back, it's not much. I'm so glad it's gone or mellowed. Nice.

There, aren't you glad you asked about my sickness?!

And, yeah, I'm having a great time, loving being here with Martin, eating wonderful food, seeing India! Dec. 5 is definitely approaching WAY too soon....

Gut stuff sure is awful. I'm glad you're over it.

And that's the problem with truly wonderful trips -- so often they have ending dates! *sigh*!

[identity profile] rampling.livejournal.com 2005-11-29 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
*sigh* indeed. So many reasons I don't want it to end....

It sounds like you had a marvelous time ... and I'm so glad your feet are starting to cooperate!

[identity profile] cjsmith.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I sure did. And the feet aren't any better, really, but I've stopped doing what irks them (walking). At least I'm learning!
